Behind every iconic scene is an iconic story.
With Kathryn Bernardo and Alden Richards returning as Joy and Ethan in the highly anticipated film sequel, “Hello, Love, Again”, it’s the perfect time to say “Hello, again!” to some behind-the-scenes secrets from the original film “Hello, Love, Goodbye”.
From small accidents that made scenes more authentic, to lines rooted in actual experiences, the film’s iconic moments were shaped by more than just the script, because they were inspired by life itself.
Thanks to writers Carmi Raymundo and Crystal San Miguel, and producer John Leo Garcia, we’ve gathered inside scoop on how the following scenes came to life. Here’s everything we learned from the recent episode of “Star Cinema List” which aired on Star Cinema’s YouTube channel on October 9:
1. The meet-cute scene
Before Joy kissed Ethan to distract the cops who have been running after her, Kathryn was instructed to run and jump around to prep herself for the chase. The writers wanted this scene to show Joy’s strength, determination, and unrelenting attitude. She doesn’t slow down for anyone. That is, until Ethan steps into the picture, literally!
Fun fact: this was the first scene that Kathryn and Alden filmed together!
2. The intimate scene
The writers felt that Joy wouldn’t get physically close to a stranger, even at her lowest point, so instead of a passionate moment, they opted for an emotional breakdown. This exposed Joy’s vulnerability and added depth to her character.
3. The ‘I don’t love you’ scene
This line hits hard, doesn’t it? Believe it or not, it was inspired by director Cathy Garcia-Sampana's relationship with her husband Louie. They have this playful way of saying “I don’t love you” to each other, not because they don’t love each other, but because “they really, really, really love each other.”
Kathryn and Alden were initially nervous about this scene, but after two nights of filming at Victoria Harbour, they absolutely nailed it.
4. The 'I want to be more' scene
This powerful scene, where Joy admits she’s tired of sacrificing for others, was a nod to Vilma Santos’ character Josie in “Anak”.
While “Anak” featured a mother willing to sacrifice everything for her family, “Hello, Love, Goodbye” showed the evolution of the OFW narrative. Twenty years later, Joy represents a new generation of OFWs who want lives beyond enduring sacrifices. She wants to grow and be more for herself.
5. The ‘Ano ba, Joy?!’ scene
During rehearsal, Kathryn accidentally called Ethan “Joy,” and the crew decided to keep the slip-up. It added authenticity to the scene because it reflected Joy’s real confusion about her feelings for Ethan. And as another subtle detail, Joy’s blouse resembled that of Ethan’s ex-girlfriend.
6. The goodbye scene
The iconic goodbye scene wasn’t meant to happen at Victoria Harbour. Heavy rain forced a location change from Avenue of the Stars, but it worked out perfectly, because their last moment at that setting symbolized Ethan and Joy’s journey coming full circle.
Which scene from “Hello, Love, Goodbye” impacted you the most? And what would you like to see in the sequel?
As “Hello, Love, Again” approaches, we’re all set to experience another heartfelt journey with Joy and Ethan. Catch it exclusively in cinemas starting November 13!
