After a four-year hiatus, Enrique Gil is finally returning to the big screen with the comedy film “I Am Not Big Bird”.

As announced during the “New Movie Alert: Enrique” event on Thursday, July 13, Enrique will star in the said irreverent comedy where his character Luis Carpio gets caught up in a case of mistaken identity, due to his uncanny resemblance to a popular porn star named Big Bird in Thailand.

“Hindi ako si Big Bird. But at some point, ako rin ang magiging Big Bird,” Enrique teased.

Given that most of his previous films were centered on romance and dramas, doing a comedy is entirely new for Enrique, and something that he’s been craving to do as an actor.

ABS-CBN Films’ head Kriz Gazmen revealed that the Kapamilya actor has been vocal about wanting to do a “groundbreaking” project, something that is different as his comeback film.

“During that time pa lang [na we’re planning Enrique’s comeback], si Quen already wants something very groundbreaking to do. Sinabi niya talaga, 'Kriz, ayoko mag-comeback doing the same things I've been doing.' He's been very conscious, and I like that he's in control in the direction of his career,” Kriz recalled.

“Sa dami ng pinitch, ito ang nagpatibok ng puso ni Quen. Really, it's a groundbreaking story when we also read it because aside from lahat ng katatawanan, what I like was, it's actually the story of a boy turning into a man. It's a sort of coming-of-age story pero na-delay lang,” he explained.

In fact, more than the desire to do something new, Enrique revealed that his father had also been a huge factor in why he decided to choose a comedy movie for his comeback.

“My dad, he's a comedian as well and he would always tell me growing up, ‘You know what Quen, whatever happens, kahit nasa work ako, I try to make people happy and make them laugh,’” Enrique recalled. “Laughter really is the best medicine, so it really stuck with me. I need to do a comedy, a full-blown comedy. So here it is.”

Together with the creative team, writers Joma Labayen and Lilit Reyes, creative manager Kookai Labayen, and director Victor Villanueva, Enrique is more than ready to take on the project.

“I'm just ready for whatever we're gonna do, whatever we're supposed to do for the film,” he enthused.

Also starring Nikko Natividad, Red Ollero, and Pepe Herrera, “I Am Not Big Bird” is a co-production between Black Sheep and Anima Studios.

Watch out because it is slated for release in cinemas this 2023!
