Aside from being hospitable, we, Filipinos, are also arguably known for being happy and romantic people. Thus, most of us are fond of watching series, movies, and other contents that are romance-themed either to feed our fantasies (especially if you’re single and/or self-confessed hopeless romantic) or to just get our dose of kilig or good vibes whenever we need it.

And these are seemingly the reasons why loveteams came to existence. From the early years of the film and television industries up to the present, various tandems were born and conquered our hearts because of the undeniable chemistry that they exude.

While there are on-screen pairs who didn’t last long due to personal or career-related circumstances, there are some who were able to continue their romantic connection behind the camera as they even turned out to become real-life couples that we avidly stan.

So, just in time for the Valentine’s Day celebration, we listed in this Kapamilya Snaps feature some of the most successful tandems on local television history!

Nora Aunor and Tirso Cruz III

Conquering the entertainment scene from the 60s up to the 80s via their slew of box-office successes, top-rating TV and radio shows, and best-selling records, Nora and Tirso are undoubtedly one of the most popular loveteams of all time.

They might have come from different walks of life – Nora from a simple in Iriga City, Camarines Sur, while Tirso from a famous family of singers and musicians – but fate had its way of intertwining their paths by bringing them together in the 1969 films “9 Teeners and Yeye Generation!” However, it was in “Young Girl” when they were first paired with each other, which brought them innumerable teleseryes and films, with the 1971 Manila Film Festival entry “Guy And Pip” being the highest grossing of all their works together.

They later on became a couple, who had an on-and-off relationship and a “daughter” they named Maria Leonora Theresa, which was actually a doll that Tirso gifted Nora. The lovely doll unbelievably shot up to stardom like her superstar “parents” and was treated as a celebrity both by the industry and fans. Unfortunately, their team-up was over after they walked on different paths and had their respective families.

Both of them are still active in showbiz, with Tirso being the current Chairman and CEO of Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP).

Vilma Santos and Edgar Mortiz

Established to become the rival of the influential “Guy and Pip” tandem, the “Vi and Bot” team-up of Vilma Santos and Edgar Mortiz went on to become successful too, as they starred in a slew of blockbuster films ever since they were launched in the 1970 flick “Young Love” and recorded several songs together.

They also became a couple for a while, with the Star For All Seasons regarding him as her first love and boyfriend, who she recalled in an interview in Magandang Buhay as super protective of her. The two might not have ended up together, but they have remained close friends and both of them have been happily married to their respective spouses.

Edgar, or more popularly known as Direk Bobot went on to become a director, writer, and creative consultant for many ABS-CBN programs, with Goin’ Bulilit, Banana Sundae, Home Sweetie Home, and LUV U as among his most notable works. Vilma, on the other hand, became a politician from 1998 to 2022 and occasionally appears in series and movies.

Sharon Cuneta and Gabby Concepcion

Sparks seemingly flew right away between Sharon and Gabby when they first worked together in the film “Dear Heart” in 1981 for they immediately became a couple. Due to its tremendous commercial success, they went on to top-bill its sequel “P.S. I Love You” on that same year, as well as the 1984 flick “Dapat Ka Bang Mahalin?” Both were blockbuster hits and bestowed them a huge fan base, hailing them as the movie power couple of the 80s.

They tied the knot on September 23, 1984 and were blessed with a beautiful daughter a year later, who they named Maria Kristina Cassandra, or KC. However, their marriage only lasted for three years as they got legally separated in 1987 and eventually got annulled in 1993.

Both of them have remained active in showbiz and have families of their own. Sharon has been blissfully married for 25 years now to former Senator Kiko Pangilinan, to whom she has three kids. Gabby also tied the knot with Genevieve Yatco Gonzales in 2004 and shares two children with her, named Savannah and Samantha. He also has two more daughters from his previous two relationships, namely, Garie and Cloie.

Maricel Soriano and William Martinez

With their natural chemistry and flair in making the viewers laugh and kilig at the same time in the movies they starred in, Maricel and William could be considered as the “Rom-Com King and Queen” of their time.

Their tandem was launched in 1981 when they headlined the movie “Oh My MamA.” Due to their notable kulitan moments and funny banters, they instantly became a well-loved pair and were eventually dubbed as Regal’s most popular love team. “Taray and Kulit” were the monikers given to them by their fans.

William and Maricel got reunited many years after in the 2009 ABS-CBN series Florinda, which was part of the program Sineserye Presents: The Susan Roces Cinema Collection. But far from the comic characters they used to portray, we found them in a different light as they played serious roles in the drama.

Both of them are still active in the industry. The veteran actor appeared in some TV shows and movies in the recent years such as FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano, while the Diamond Star is set to appear in the upcoming series Linlang and currently runs her own YouTube channel.

Judy Ann Santos and Wowie De Guzman

As Judy Ann marked one of her greatest breakthroughs when she portrayed one of the titular roles in the long-running classic ABS-CBN melodrama “Mara Clara,” it was also when she met Wowie De Guzman, a member of the dance group Universal Motion Dancers who stood as his leading man and eventual first boyfriend.

Apart from their astounding performances on the said series, their notable chemistry also caught the hearts of the viewers. Thus, they went on to star in another classic drama entitled Esperanza in 1997 and several films, such as “Mara Clara: The Movie” (1996), “Esperanza: The Movie” (1999), “Paano Ang Puso Ko?” (1997), and “Muling Ibalik Ang Tamis Ng Pag-ibig” (1998). They were hailed as one of the most popular showbiz tandems in the 90s.

Wowie has remained active in the recent years by appearing in a number of TV shows and movies and also became a vlogger and a Zumba instructor, while being a hands-on single dad to his unica hija Raff. Judy Ann also lives a pretty busy life in the past years as she juggles being a celebrity, a mother, a wife, and owner of multiple restaurant businesses. She last appeared in FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano and Starla, and even hosted the Kapamilya public service program Paano Kita Mapasasalamatan?

Jolina Magdangal and Marvin Agustin

Their team-up was born in 1996 through the teen-oriented series Gimik. Due to their unmistakable chemistry, they went on to star in a string of successful movie and TV projects, such as “Labs Ko Si Babe” (1999), “Flames: The Movie” (1997), “Kung Ayaw Mo, Huwag Mo” (1998), “Labs Kita…Okey Ko Lang?” (1998), and “Gimik: The Reunion” (1999), gaining them the recognition of being one of the most popular on-screen pairs of the 90s.

Both of them transferred to another network in the early 2000s, and then returned to ABS-CBN in 2015 and delighted their ardent shippers anew when they worked together in the soap opera Flordeliza.

At present, the Magandang Buhay host is a dutiful homemaker to her lovely family with Rivermaya band member Mark Escueta, while Marvin is hands-on in taking good care of his twin sons and in managing his food businesses. The two have remained close through the years and even did a few projects together in the recent years.

Claudine Barretto and Rico Yan

Unfortunately, their four-year love story faced a tragic end following Rico’s untimely death on March 29, 2002. She’s still active in showbiz, with the Maalaala Mo Kaya “Dancefloor” episode and “Etiquette For Mistresses” (2015) as among her latest works under ABS-CBN.

Meanwhile, Kim is one of the hosts of It’s Showtime and is set to headline the upcoming series Linlang and currently runs her own YouTube channel.

Kim Chiu and Xian Lim

After her team-up with her former on-screen partner ended, Kim was then paired with then-newbie actor Xian. They may have agreed to work separately, with Xian dabbling to film directing and transferring to another network in 2022, but that never hindered them falling in love with each other deeper. They’ve become a couple for already quite sometime now and have been very supportive of each other’s endeavors.

Coco Martin and Julia Montes

The 14-year age gap between them seemed to be not a problem to Coco and Julia as they went on to become one of the most well-loved tandems in the country. They first worked together in the 2011 teen drama Growing Up, but it was only in the 2012 classic soap opera Walang Hanggan wherein they were first teamed up. It was followed by their starring stint in the movie “A Moment In Time” in 2013 and in Wansapanataym: Yamishita’s Treasures in 2015.

Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla

This year, the reel-to-real sweethearts mark their 12th year as a loveteam and 11th year as a lovely couple.

Nadine Lustre and James Reid

As they instantly made everyone kilig with their inaugural team-up in the music video of James’ single “Alam Niya Ba?” released in 2013, they went on to snag their breakthrough stints in “Diary ng Panget” in 2014 that gave birth to their phenomenal loveteam.

At present, Liza is pursuing her international career as an actress under the management of James Reid’s record label Careless, while Enrique still keeps fans waiting for his next project. Despite not being able to spend much time together because of the distance, the two have remained together, with Quen melting our hearts through his sweet birthday greeting for Liza last January.

Julia Barretto and Joshua Garcia

Coming from different walks of life – Julia as a scion of the influential Barretto clan, while Joshua as a simple young Batangueño who joined Pinoy Big Brother All In to help his family – the two found their paths intertwined when they got paired for the first time in the 2016 Metro Manila Film Festival entry “Vince And Kath And James.”

Romance apparently bloomed between them while working on the said movie, with Joshua confessing at the press conference of their 2018 movie “Love You To The Stars And Back” that he already had a crush on Julia even before they got to work together, and that he actually had been courting her since early 2017.

Outside of their movie projects, they were spotted in different occasion together in 2017 – Coldplay’s Manila concert, Star Magic Ball, and Barretto Family’s Christmas vacation in Japan. JoshLia may have gone through a rough patch in 2018, but they’re able to mend it and went on to work on their first-ever teleserye together, Ngayon At Kailanman.

Although they didn’t have any official confirmation of their relationship, their avid shippers were surely delighted when they found out through Instagram Stories that they were on their second year as a couple in April 2019. But that happiness didn’t last long as the two announced their breakup in June without disclosing the reason behind it.

JoshLia last appeared together in the music video of Moira Dela Torre’s “Paubaya”, wherein they personally wrote their dialogues expressing how much they loved and forgive each other. This seemed to be the perfect closure for JoshLia fans who were left heartbroken by their split.

Loisa Andalio and Ronnie Alonte

While the pairs on this list started us workmates, these two were already a real couple before they were teamed up with each other for the reel. Both showbiz neophytes, Loisa and Ronnie met on It’s Showtime as members of its in-house groups GirlTrends and Hashtags, respectively. Maymay Entrata and Edward Barber

Another loveteam formed through PBB was MayWard, whose paths first crossed when they both became Lucky Season 7 housemates in 2016. They might have different backgrounds and personalities – Maymay as a naïve and wacky barrio lass from Cagayan De Oro City, while Edward a shy and soft-spoken Filipino-British from Germany – but those didn’t hinder them from establishing a tight bond and natural chemistry.

As soon as they returned to the outside world, slew of projects welcomed them, which include “Loving In Tandem” (2017), La Luna Sangre (2017), “Wansapantaym: Ikaw Ang Ghost-o Ko “(2018), Hiwaga ng Kambat (2019), MMK “Sunflower” (2019) and “Princess DayaReese” (2021).

The two eventually parted ways, with Maymay focusing on her music career, while Edward on his hosting jobs. Both of them are regulars on ASAP Natin ‘To, yet they seldom share the same screen.

Belle Mariano and Donny Pangilinan

They may have been in the local entertainment scene for years now, but it was only in the 2021 hit teen series He’s Into Her where Belle and Donny had the chance to work together. Their first-ever team-up immediately garnered a huge following, thus DonBelle was born.

The success of their tandem led to two movies, “Love Is Color Blind” (2021) and “An Inconvenient Love” (2022), as well as the sequel of He’s Into Her last year. Today, they are considered by many as the next big loveteam in Philippine showbiz.

Francine Diaz and Seth Fedelin

They started out as close friends and mere castmates when they worked together in Kadenang Ginto (2018) and Huwag Kang Mangamba (2021), wherein they were initially paired with other fellow teen stars. But now, Francine and Seth are now the newest Kapamilya tandem as they join the cast of the controversial series Dirty Linen and are currently known as FranSeth.

KD Estrada and Alexa Ilacad

Last, but definitely not the least, is KDLex, who was also formed during their PBB Kumunity Season 10 stint in 2021. It was their passion for music, impressive musical talents, and similarities that truly connected them. They might have failed to make it at least in the Big 4, but their unmistakable chemistry was so endearing that they were bestowed their first concert together and the iWantTFC series “Run To Me” as soon as they went back to the outside world.

As they marked the first anniversary of their loveteam recently, KD and Alexa is about to dabble on their first musical theater gig, through which they are going to exhibit their vocal and acting prowess.

Kapamilya, who among these loveteams did you or are you avidly shipping?
