Karina’s hockey training started in May this year, influenced by Alonzo, son of her Viral Scandal co-star Dimples Romana. Since she’s been tagging along with Dimples’ family in some of their activities, she was there when Alonzo’s team was recruiting more members, “Hindi na ako nakatanggi.”

The Kapamilya actress eventually got more interested realizing that it could deepen the bond between her and her dad. “Dumating ‘yung father ko from America tapos nalaman ko na very into hockey siya kasi ‘yung kuya ko ay hockey player sa ibang bansa… ‘Yung father ko, enjoy na enjoy siya. Natuwa naman ako na finally we had something to talk about. Kasi siyempre, ako, Filipino, tapos American siya, ‘yung jokes ko hindi niya gets. Wala kaming inside jokes kasi iba kami ng culture. ‘Yung movie tastes namin magkaiba rin. So, parang, until we found the love for hockey. Tapos tuwang-tuwa kami,” shared Karina in this episode of Kapamilya Chat.

Although women’s hockey has become more popular than before, there remains a stigma that it’s suited for guys because of its physical demands. Karina believes it’s time to break this stereotype. Hockey players can come in all shapes, sizes, and genders. What’s more important is the player’s sense of discipline, teamwork, and determination.

She also tried figure skating, which is considered more feminine, but it’s just not the right sport for her. She instead fell in love with hockey as it teaches her camaraderie and discipline and she can be an ordinary person while playing. There’s no pressure to look perfect while inside the rink. It has also become her form of escape, or actors call it “pagpag,” after an exhausting cycle of acting and crying in front of the cameras.

Karina humbly admits she still needs a lot of practice, “Nandito ako to train, to be good. Hindi naman sa makipag-unahan sa inyo kung sinong unang mag-i-improve.” Karina is open to the possibility of representing the country in an ice hockey competition in the future. For now, she’s enjoying the process of learning and falling and getting back up again in the ice rink.
