Before the month of February ended, several Star Magic heartthrobs had the chance to play and exhibit their flair in basketball as they participated in the first-ever Star Magic Celebrity 3x3 Basketball Match held last February 28 at The Third Floor Gym in Quezon City, which is owned by actor Gerald Anderson, who also serves as the tournament commissioner.

Six teams with four members each vied for the most coveted trophy. Ashton Salvador, Lance Carr, Jimboy Martin, and Tristan Ramirez comprised Team 1; BGYO members Mikki Claver and Akira Morishita, CJ Salonga, and Elyson de Dios made up Team 2; BGYO member JL Toreliza, Anthony Barion, River Joseph, and Luke Alford comprised Team 3; Tan Roncal, Crismar Menchavez, Kyron Aguilera, and Isaiah Dela Cruz made up Team 4; Joao Constancia, Gerard Acao, Matt Evans, and Neil Coleta comprised Team 5; while Ronnie Alonte, Argel Saycon, Nyoy Volante, and LA Santos made up Team 6.

In the end, it was the Team Laguna of celebrity players Argel, Nyoy, LA, and Ronnie that was hailed the champion of the tournament, with Argel being named as the Most Valuable Player. The event was hosted by actress Aya Fernandez, with Krystal Brimner as the guest performer.

In an exclusive interview of Star Magic with Gerald during the initial practice of the celebrity players for the then-upcoming competition, he imparted that the participants were actually “culture shocked” since its totally different from the usual 5 on 5 that we’re accustomed to.

“Medyo na-culture shock sila because 3-on-3 is a very different game sa 5-on-5, na I’m sure nakasanayan nating lahat. This is more intense, even sa training grabe sa intensity. They are being trained by the best – si Coach Chico [Lanete] na dating PBA player na nag-represent din ng bansa natin sa 3-on-3. So, iba ‘yong fundamentals, iba ‘yong mga techniques. Ang mga natututunan nila, they get to practice opposite of our Chooks-To-Go 3x3 players who represent the country,” he stated.
