“Rewind” is now officially the highest grossing film of all time in Philippine domestic sales!
The Metro Manila Film Festival 2023 entry grossed an impressive P845 million worldwide as of Jan. 17, 2024, 3PM, as announced by Star Cinema on its social media accounts.
Top-billed by the powerhouse husband-and-wife team of Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera, “Rewind” has eclipsed the domestic box office milestone set by “Hello, Love, Goodbye” with P691 million in 2019.
This sweeping triumph moved DongYan to share during the film’s thanksgiving party last January 17, Wednesday, that this feat is more than just a success in box office numbers — he considers it a testament to the message of the film that resonated with people, as reported by ABS-CBN News.
“Noong binasa namin ‘to, isa lang gusto namin mangyari, bonus na lang figure, alam namin maraming pinagdaanan tao ng pandemic. Kaya sabi namin, sana gawin kaming instrumento ng Panginoon [to] touch [ang] puso nila na magbago at mas mahalin ang mga tao sa paligid nila,” Marian spoke of her motivations in making the film.
“’Yung message na ito lang, makalat sa mga tao,” she said. “Ang pinakaimportante sa amin ay ang message ng film na ito, na talagang tumatak sa puso nila.”
Dingdong also shared, “Iba 'pag nakakausap mo mga tao at kwinento paano naging impact sa buhay nila. 'Yun, priceless. Itong figure says ganito kadami nanuod. We are so grateful we were able to tell the story.”
The story of “Rewind” revolves around John (played by Dingdong), a hot-headed husband who gets the rare chance to travel back in time to correct his mistakes and bring his beloved wife, Mary (played by Marian), back to life.
In celebration of this cinematic achievement, ABS-CBN chairman Mark Lopez said that he “hopes we can continue to create great movies like this in the future.”
Even though he was not present at the thanksgiving event, ABS-CBN president Carlo Katigbak also relayed his message through Star Cinema's head and managing director Kriz Gazmen. Lopez said that “’Rewind’ will surely go down in history as one of the movie greats, a true classic.”
Directed by Mae Cruz-Alviar, the film, which premiered last December 25, 2023, features a talented ensemble cast, including Lito Pimentel, Ariel Ureta, Sue Ramirez, Ina Feleo, Via Antonio, Joross Gamboa, Pamu Pamorada, Chamyto Guedan, and Coney Reyes.
“Rewind” continues to reach audiences far and wide as it is currently showing in over 300 cinemas in the Philippines, the United States, Canada, Guam, and Saipan. Soon, it will also be screened in the Middle East. Stay tuned!
