Directors discuss origins of Lavender Fields

When a series starts airing, the buzz is often centered around the actors—their thoughts, their preparations, and those taping stories that fans love to hear. But isn’t it even juicier when we get to hear directly from the directors, the very minds shaping the entire narrative and visual experience of the show?

Directors bring a unique perspective that goes beyond what we see on screen; they delve into the creative process, share their vision, and explain the choices that turn a script into a living, breathing series. Hearing from them offers a deeper understanding of the show.

That’s exactly what makes the guesting of “Lavender Fields” directors Manny Palo and Jojo Saguin on cast member Maricel Soriano’s vlog so exciting. It’s not just about promoting the show, but also about diving into the creative brains behind it. Manny and Jojo shared their insights on how “Lavender Fields” came to be—from where and whom the idea originated, why it bears its intriguing title, and how they meticulously chose each cast member to perfectly embody their roles.

This rare discussion is also a chance for viewers to learn more about these brilliant directors’ backstories. While the stars shine on screen, the ones working behind the scenes deserve their moment in the spotlight, too, right?

Direk Manny initially pursued a degree in B.S. Biology, wanting to build a career in medicine. But life often has a way of throwing unexpected turns, and sometimes, taking a detour can lead you to where you’re meant to be. While studying at the University of the Philippines, he discovered his knack for creative writing, and he was captivated enough to enroll in lessons and explore this newfound passion further.

It was as if destiny had aligned perfectly for him, as not long after, he received an unexpected offer to be a writer for a project under the legendary Fernando Poe, Jr. The idea of meeting FPJ in person left him initially starstruck, but his nerves quickly dissolved thanks to FPJ’s warmth and charisma. Their first encounter wasn’t a formal meeting but rather a casual conversation filled with stories, laughter, and a few bottles of booze, where they bonded over shared experiences. By the end of that memorable day, FPJ made it clear that he wanted Manny to write his next film. And that’s where his career in film writing took off.

FPJ films played a significant role in shaping Direk Manny’s career, with classics like “Kahit Butas Ng Karayom Papasukin Ko,” “Kahit Konting Pagtingin,” and “Walang Matigas Na Tinapay Sa Mainit Na Kape” included in his impressive portfolio. It’s also interesting to note that he was the writer behind the sequel to the original “Ang Probinsyano” movie, titled “Pagbabalik ng Probinsyano.”

For creatives, the journey of discovery never truly ends; it’s a path driven by an insatiable curiosity and a deep passion for the craft. Each new skill unlocked can lead to yet another unexplored world. This was certainly the case for Direk Manny, who began his career in writing but soon found himself craving more creative challenges. His desire for growth led him to venture into directing, and before long, he was working as an assistant director under some of the industry’s most respected filmmakers, such as Joel Lamangan. His first project with Direk Joel was the family drama film “Filipinas,” which also had Maricel in the cast.

But, during that time, Direk Manny felt it was extremely challenging to transition into becoming a full-fledged director because filmmaking back then wasn’t as accessible as it is now. Unlike today, where you only need a digital camera or even a cell phone to make a film, the era he started in required more resources and equipment that weren't readily available. After a decade of being an assistant director—a role he took pride in—he decided to leave upon receiving a scholarship to pursue a Master’s degree in film direction at a film institute in India in 2004.

When he returned to the Philippines, he began his directorial journey with ABS-CBN, particularly under the Dreamscape Entertainment production unit. He fondly recalls how the late Dreamscape head, Deo Endrinal, personally interviewed him during his application.

Direk Jojo also began his career at ABS-CBN, joining the network right after finishing college. One of his most unforgettable early experiences was working on a Christmas Special segment featuring the iconic women of ABS-CBN, including Maricel. It was during this project that he first met Maricel in person; he initially thought she might be a bit intimidating, but he was pleasantly surprised to find her warm and down-to-earth.

Direk Jojo can also relate to Direk Manny’s struggles during his early years in the industry, particularly when it came to the numerous challenges that made directing such a daunting task. He highlighted how the absence of modern technology was a huge obstacle, especially while he was working with ABS-CBN’s recording teams.

“Dati kasi wala pang Google to search the lyrics ng kanta. So, napag-uusapan namin recently lang at natatawa kami, kasi mag-play ka ng song tapos [papakinggan] mo, kung ano’ng sounds like, ‘yun ang isusulat mo… Tapos ire-record mo ‘yung tape, ide-deliver mo sa bahay ng mga artista nang mag-isa ka,” he fondly recalled.

Eventually, Direk Jojo climbed the ranks and became an associate producer for Kapamilya talk shows like "Today With Kris." This role allowed him to dive deep into the complexities of camera work and production, until his potential caught the eye of ABS-CBN boss Cory Vidanes, who offered him an executive producer position. However, Direk Jojo was resolute in his passion for directing, as he was already making music videos at the time. Fortunately, the management supported his dream and allowed him to first direct TV talk shows before moving on to teleseryes.

His first major project was "May Bukas Pa,"which remains one of his most memorable series, not only because it marked his debut as a teleserye director, but also because the inspirational drama became a personal vessel for him to express his faith. “Parang pasasalamat ko kay Lord… It’s my way off sharing to the people the Word of God in my own little way,” he said.

Meanwhile, for Direk Manny, “The General's Daughter” holds a special place in his heart, mainly due to its powerhouse ensemble cast. The show featured some of the country's top talents, headlined by Angel Locsin, together with Arjo Atayde, Albert Martinez, Tirso Cruz III, Eula Valdes, Janice de Belen, and, of course, Maricel.

Lavender Fields

Direk Manny and Direk Jojo are well familiar of each other’s creative and directorial prowess, and once again, they have teamed up to create what is hailed as the grandest teleserye of 2024, “Lavender Fields.” The show premiered on Monday, September 2, on the ABS-CBN Primetime Bida block.

What truly sets “Lavender Fields” apart isn't just its captivating storyline or the plot that unfolds on screen, but also the interesting story of how it came it to be. The series was inspired by the late Deo Endrinal’s passion for flowers. Direk Manny shared, “Sa bahay niya, ang ganda ng mga floral arragements. Mahusay din siya at mahilig sa tablescaping. In fact, nag-aral siya ng floral arrangement sa London,” Direk Manny revealed about the late TV producer.

He continued, “Doon sa bar niya, merong neon sign na nakalagay, ‘Who are you when no one is watching?’ Sabi niya, ‘Parang magandang premise ‘yan sa isang series.’ At dahil nga biyahe siya nang biyahe sa London, pumupunta siya sa malalaking lavender fields. Bukod sa lavender, or purple yata, is his favorite color.” And that’s where the vision about “Lavender Fields” originated.

Although Deo was unable to see his dream come to fruition, the team is dedicated to making this project a fitting tribute to his leadership and creative genius.

When it came to casting for the series, Direk Jojo revealed that some actors were chosen through auditions, while others were handpicked specifically for their roles. Lead stars like Jodi Sta. Maria, Janine Gutierrez, Albert Martinez, Edu Manzano, and Maricel Soriano were carefully selected by the management for their roles. Initially, there were doubts about whether Jericho Rosales would accept the offer, given that he hadn't been in a teleserye for six years. Fortunately, he was intrigued by the script and agreed to join. Jolina Magdangal, who had also taken a break from series work, completed the major cast lineup.

For directors Manny and Jojo, being handed a gripping story is already a gift. But when that script is paired with the right casting, it elevates the project to an entirely new level. Maricel also feels that the casting is nothing short of perfect, with every actor, including the younger ones, fitting their roles seamlessly. She particularly praised Miguel Vergara, who plays her grandson in the series. She was impressed with how quickly the young actor could grasp directions and deliver his performance.

When asked what sets “Lavender Fields” apart from the other shows they've done, Direk Manny noted that this project is a new ball game for him. The series is not just about intense emotions and gripping narrative; it is also laced with action elements predominantly driven by female characters, which is a refreshing change in Philippine television.

Lavender Fields” goes beyond being just another revenge drama, as every character is richly nuanced, each with their own motives and secrets. For instance, we only know Maricel’s character as the savior of Jodi’s Jasmin, but it would soon become clear that she has her own agenda as well.

There’s palpable excitement surrounding the newest Kapamilya teleserye, especially with hints from Direk Jojo about the cast is not holding back when it comes to their performances. He shared how excited he felt about finally getting to direct Maricel under his unit, and the Diamond Star truly did not disappoint in the first heavy scene they did together. The dedication of the actors, combined with the intricate storyline and action-packed scenes, makes Lavender Fields” a show that promises to captivate and thrill its audience every step of the way.

To keep the energy fun during the vlog-interview, Maricel had her guests play a picture game where Direk Manny and Direk Jojo shared their honest thoughts about whoever appeared in the images.

First on the list was Jodi, and the directors had nothing but praise for her. “Si Jodi, ‘pag artista mo siya, wala ka ng problema. Bukod sa napakabait sa set, she comes prepared. She really is one of the best actresses of her generation,” said Manny, who has collaborated with Jodi on numerous projects like 100 Days to Heaven” and the groundbreaking ABS-CBN and GMA Network collaboration “Unbreak My Heart.”

On the next photo, featuring Janine, Direk Jojo shared that the Kapamilya actress initially hesitated to take on the role of Iris, her first complex, ‘kontrabida’ character. Despite this, he's incredibly proud of how Janine has embraced the role and delved deeply into her character's psyche. Beyond being a talented actress, Janine is also described as down-to-earth.

The directors had amusing comments about Jericho, describing him as "aligaga" due to his playful and energetic nature. However, once the cameras start rolling, he quickly shifts into serious mode.

They also divulged Jolina's habit of bringing food for everyone. Similarly, Edu loves giving out souvenirs and has a magnetic charm that makes him the “darling” of the set. He’s also one of the most punctual.

Maricel also arrives early and enjoys indulging in food trips. Direk Manny shared an anecdote about a scene where he needed to film Maricel sitting down, but the camera kept catching her tummy bulge from all the snacking she did throughout the day, so he had to cover it up with a flower vase prop. Maricel laughed heartily as Direk Manny recounted the incident.

While there's a bit of ‘kulit’ on set, it's balanced out by Albert being serious and intensely focused on studying his scenes.

As for the younger cast members—Miguel, Jana Agoncillo, Krystal Mejes, and Marc Santiago—the directors weren’t surprised by their impressive skills since they have started their careers as child stars. Direk Manny has also seen their growth firsthand, having worked with them since they were little.
