In the trending teleserye “FPJ’s Batang Quiapo,” we see Tanggol (Coco Martin) and his friends get dragged into the wrong path. But thanks to the likes of Berting (Joey Marquez), who impart timeless words of wisdom and show genuine care, he is able to get a clearer perspective on life. In this Kapamilya Toplist, we rounded up scenes of Berting as a father figure to Tanggol.

When Tanggol’s group ran to him for rescue after escaping the cops, Berting fostered them without judgment. Instead, he gave them a chance to redeem themselves. He encouraged them to leave the rouge life behind, saying they still have plenty of time to change their lives for the better.

He fully embraced the responsibility to fix the guys’ moral compass, though he didn’t have to. He brought him to his workplace and helped them apply as kitchen helpers. When put in trouble after saving Mokang (Lovi Poe) from their rude co-workers, Berting turned frustrated. As their ‘tatay-tatayan,’ he wants them to be careful with their actions. His only request is they learn to be more patient, to take a pause before exploding into rage and engaging in violent behavior.

In one episode, they were trapped in a police shootout and took the attaché case from Greg (RK Bagatsing), which they didn’t know contain illegal drugs. Berting demonstrated wise decision-making and then praised Tanggol for sticking with his principle. He was satisfied with Tanggol’s decision to surrender the drugs to Rigor (John Estrada) instead of keeping it for money. At the same time, he stuck by them in solving the problem.

Berting perseveres in diminishing Tanggol’s temper. He confiscated the group’s weapons, hoping it’ll teach them not to act in anger. Part of his reminders is to let go of the desire for vendetta and withdraw from risky situations. He related his experience as a former cop, saying he witnessed the lives of many people get ruined by violent tendencies. He was against their plan to get even with their rival Tondo group for beating up Tanggol. “Sasayangin n’syo lang ang mga buhay n’yo,” he said about revenge.

Berting will put his life on the line just to help fix Tanggol’s mess. When Tanggol decided to turn over the drugs to his father, Berting thought it would be better if he himself faces Rigor. This manifested his willingness to protect Tanggol. In the succeeding scene, the two talked over booze, as Tanggol thanked Berting for showing him ‘malasakit’ or concern, as well as guidance that he never experienced with Rigor. He asked him to never get tired of teaching them firm life lessons.

Just when they were supposed to turn over the drugs to Rigor, their group encountered Greg and his henchmen, resulting in a wild shootout. Berting ordered Tanggol not to pull the trigger as Greg begged for his life. However, Tanggol knew he must put an end to Greg’s wickedness right away.

Life is a journey that doesn’t come with a cheat sheet, evinced by Tanggol’s character. But when it becomes a confusing maze, a father figure’s golden advice taken from experience and wisdom can help make the path clearer.
