Marites (Cherry Pie Picache) became a mother to a stranger’s child, and for a time, it was the worst nightmare that happened in her life. But the love outflowed, enough to wash away the bitterness and hurt. Though Tanggol (Coco Martin) doesn’t feel it enough, the truth is he is loved by his mother as shown in this Kapamilya Toplist of scenes from FPJ’s Batang Quiapo.

A mother will protect her child ‘til her last breath. However frustrating and difficult, Marites tries to defend her son from her husband Rigor (John Estrada)’s violent acts. When Rigor chased Tanggol with a firearm around the neighborhood, Marites meddled and begged him to hear out all sides of the story. She believed Tanggol wouldn’t engage in a riot without a valid reason.

“Natural ipaglalaban ko si Tanggol. Anak ko ‘yun, eh,” she confronted Rigor, who implied that she failed as a mother by tolerating her son’s behavior. She will stand up for her child, knowing in her heart that he’s capable of goodness as well. This, she proved, when she met street kids Tolits (Aaron “Yorme” Sunga) and Tala (Erin Espiritu) and heard their narrative about Tanggol’s generosity and kindness. Thus, she supported his decision to adopt them.

The feud at home, however, forced Tanggol to pack his things. Marites was confronted by guilt upon learning that he’s been saving up for years, hoping to give them a more comfortable place. She swallowed her pride and started looking for Tanggol through his closest brother Santino (Ronwaldo Martin) and his friends. Then she left him a message, “Sabihin n’yo umuwi na siya at nag-aalala na ako.”

The world may condemn Tanggol, but in her heart, he always has room for improvement. Things went into a downward spiral when Tanggol fled from the cops with his friends and Mokang (Lovi Poe) after saving the latter from JP (Dino Imperial)’s lascivious act. She faced Mokang’s furious parents, Marsing (Pen Medina) and Nita (Susan Africa), to apologize on her son’s behalf and pleaded with them to understand all perspectives of the situation.

When she feels all her effort comes to nothing, she implores the aid of Jesus Nazarene. You will feel a mother’s love is real through her prayers. She asked Jesus Nazarene to give Tanggol protection and enlightenment, so he may fix his eye on the right path.

There is no greater warrior than a mother protecting her child, they say. And Marites is living proof.
