Holy Week is one of the most important and solemn celebrations observed by the faithful Catholics. Part of its tradition is visiting churches to offer prayers and reflect, while some head out to unwind.

Quiapo is the country’s center of piousness and along its streets are fascinating heritage landmarks and other spots that cater to the common man’s needs and interests. Here are things to do in Quiapo as seen on FPJ’s Batang Quiapo.

Visit Quiapo Church

Devotees gather at the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene or Quiapo Church, especially during special celebrations like observance of Holy Week. Central to the Filipino devotion is the icon of the Black Nazarene, believed by many Catholics to be miraculous.

Buy souvenir items

Another reason Filipinos flock to Quiapo is its plethora of bargain stores, which sell devotional items such as rosaries, candles, shirts with the image of the Black Nazarene, and religious statues.

Food crawl

The Quiapo food space is imprinted with vibrant cultural influences that constantly evolve and thrive. For instance, Chinese cuisine is present in stalls that offer hopia, lumpia, siopao, and mami. There are also food hubs that sell local delicacies like chicken piaparan (chicken simmered in coconut milk and turmeric). Another popular meal in Quiapo is the 10-peso pastil or cooked rice with meat topping wrapped in banana leaves, which Tanggol (Coco Martin) and Mokang (Lovi Poe) enjoyed on their spontaneous date.

Go for a walking tour

Touring around Quiapo will make you love old Manila again, at the same time fascinate you with its modern enhancement. As Tanggol said, “Paganda na nang paganda dito ‘no? Nakakatuwa! Ang dami ng building.” He and Mokang stood on the Quezon Bridge, which attracts onlookers with its aesthetic appeal.
