Similar to these characters, would you also be prepared to sacrifice your own life for the sake of others?

They say that the greatest sacrifice is when you give up your own life for the sake of someone else’s. The act of giving one’s life for others, exemplified by Jesus Christ, serves as a reminder of the value of the people dear to our hearts, especially as Holy Week approaches.

Several Kapamilya teleseryes have portrayed this lesson through characters that died as an act of sacrifice. Kapamilya Time-List presents the scenes from ABS-CBN seryes that can inspire you to delve deeper into the meaning of this selfless act of love.

The video opens with a scene from the fantasy series “Dyosa.” Adonis (Sam Milby) made many sacrifices for the goddess who owned his heart, but the ultimate form of which was giving up his own life to protect Josephine (Anne Curtis) from Diana (Nikki Bacolod)’s perilous quest for power.

The greater the sacrifice, the greater the love, they say. Mokang (Lovi Poe) lived up to this oft-quoted adage in “FPJ’s Batang Quiapo” when she ran towards Tanggol (Coco Martin) in an attempt to save him from Olga (Irma Adlawan), but only to catch the bullet that was meant for him. This was her testament of love.

The same goes for Brian (Joshua Garcia) from “Mars Ravelo’s Darna.” To aid his beloved Narda (Jane de Leon), the mortal alter-ego of the superhero Darna, he bravely intervened in the battle between Darna and Valentina (Janella Salvador), giving the latter an opportunity to attack him. Despite his effort to survive for Narda, the venom inside him was too strong, ultimately resulting in his demise.

Isn’t it beautiful when a person saves others in the name of pure friendship and loyalty? Demonstrating his dedication to Romina (Beauty Gonalez) in the hit afternoon drama “Kadenang Ginto,” Jepoy (Josh Ivan Morales) displayed courage by taking away the cake at Romina’s business launch, which the villains Daniela (Dimples Romana) and Hector (Joko Diaz) had rigged with a bomb, ultimately killing himself in the process.

Heroes, of course, are expected to make big acts of sacrifices. As the protector of the white stone that transforms her into Darna and grants her power, Leonor (Iza Calzado) was expected to defend her people no matter the cost. As the aliens called Extras attacked the town of Nueva Esperanza in “Mars Ravelo’s Darna,” she fought for the people, especially her children Narda (Jane de Leon) and Ding (Zaijian Jaranilla). When Narda threw the stone to Leonor for her to transform into a superhero, Leonor vanished as the aliens shot and killed her.

By heroes, we include the brave uniformed individuals serving in the military and police forces. Soldiers dying in war, risking their lives to protect us, remind us to be thankful for their sacrifices in ensuring our peace and freedom. A huge part of a soldier’s commitment is also to fight for the comrade next to him. This is precisely what Alex (Gerald Anderson) demonstrated when he died in the line of duty to protect his fellow soldier and adoptive brother Elmer (Vin Abrenica), whom his biological brother and rebel group leader Saal (Sid Lucero) was about to shoot in the ABS-CBN military drama “A Soldier’s Heart.” As one of the dialogues in the series goes, “Walang kapayapaan kung walang kamatayan.”

As a devoted official, General Delfin Borja or Lolo Delfin (Jaime Fabregas) made myriad sacrifices for his family and countrymen in “FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano.” He even dedicated his final breath to his grandson Cardo (Coco Martin) by distracting the enemies, allowing Cardo to make a narrow escape from the group of assassins, but ultimately leading to his heartbreaking demise.

But, yes, even individuals devoid of superpowers and weaponry can demonstrate extraordinary sacrifices, particularly when they are parents. A mother will never abandon her child even in the face of death – this, Nanang Sabel (Maricel Soriano) demonstrated in a truly unforgettable scene from “The General’s Daughter.” When her son, Elai (Arjo Atayde), discovered the identity of one of Tiago (Tirso Cruz III)’s spies in the military, the terrorist leader had him kidnapped then shot in cold blood. As Nanang Sabel entered the scene, she wept uncontrollably upon seeing her dead son on the ground. But instead of running away to save her own life, she faced her son’s killer, and in an attempt to retaliate, threw a rock onto Tiago’s head, provoking the latter to shoot her dead as well.

In the legendary tale of “Imortal,” when a group of vampires raided the house of Lyka (Angel Locsin) and her family, she singlehandedly fought them and saved her daughter from being killed by the leader Magnus (Jake Roxas), which, unfortunately, led to her demise.

The next scene is from the POV of a doting father. As the war of vengeance and justice between the Fieros and Alexa (Janine Gutierrez)’s family reached its culmination in “Dirty Linen,” Rolando (Joel Torre) was left with no choice but to put down his gun to free Alexa from Carlos (John Arcilla)’s grasp. However, as they were about to flee, Rolando noticed that Carlos was aiming to shoot Alexa. Without hesitation, he positioned himself in front of her and took the bullet.

In “Huwag Kang Mangamba,” Elias (Christopher de Leon) might not be related to Joy (Francine Diaz) and Mira (Andrea Brillantes) by blood, but he became a father figure to them. As Mira’s ally in liberating Hermoso from the fake prophet Deborah (Eula Valdes), he once saved the young lady from the bullet of a syndicate leader. Fortunately, the heavens heard Mira’s cries and granted Elias a miraculous resurrection. However, as the chaos in Hermoso intensified, he once again died by shielding Mira’s sister, Joy, from Deborah’s follower who was about to attack with a knife.

Lastly, when we talk about the most memorable sacrifices in “Dolce Amore,” Binggoy (Kean Cipriano)’s big act of selflessness would be hard to ignore. Viewers initially disliked him for his stubborn ways, but when trapped in a life-or-death situation as the jeepney he was in with Tenten (Enrique Gil) and Serena (Liza Soberano) fell off the road, he wholeheartedly accepted his fate after a tearjerking exchange with Tenten.

These acts of sacrificing one’s own life so others may live serve as a powerful testament to the power of love and selflessness.
