After a long and hard day, they gave us a chance to relax and wake up the next morning refreshed. What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim has officially joined the list of Korean dramas we all love and will miss. So, to celebrate its successful finale, meet the woman that makes sure every episode is dubbed and ready to air.
Ma. Perpetua Narvasa was at the right place at the right time. It was during her years in Miriam College when she managed to find connections that got her into this industry. Back in 1994, the theater guild’s moderator was also a dubbing director for ABS-CBN. So, through their guild’s president she had made a request, “Sabi ko sabihin mo interesado ako mag-dub’”. Luckily, there was a new project in the works then. Without long, she landed a role on Julio at Julia: Kambal ng Tadhana. She had never tried voice acting before, yet she naturally adjusted into the niche. “Maayos naman siguro ‘yung register ng voice ko kahit na first timer ako. Tapos, at the same time, na-gets ko kaagad ‘yung dynamics,” she retold.
Admittedly, however, this was not her original plan. Narvasa considers herself as a frustrated actress with initial hopes for the theater and television. Nevertheless, she is still thankful and happy with her career path now, especially because it is her family’s bread and butter. “At least ito, it’s another way of acting for me.”
Over the years, she had experienced dubbing for cartoons, Mexican novellas and even singing theme songs. As a director, Narvasa considers her projects as “premium titles”, namely Goblin, W, and the classic favorite My Girl. As well as Black which she considers as one of the most challenging shows she has worked on.
“It’s a challenge to keep up with the story,” she explained. Both the characters and timeline were closely intertwined. The amount of dedication needed was also demanding. One episode was equivalent to two movies, “Parang ang schedule ko from sunrise to sunrise.” Even though their team has writers and translators, it was still part of her job to supervise the script and make changes if necessary, “Hindi puwedeng kung ano sinulat ni writer, ‘yun na ‘yun.”
With many big dramas under her belt, What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim is a proud addition to her resume. Some of her favorite characters were Ivan, “dahil may kasamang pag-ibig,” she joked. “Tuwang-tuwa ako kay Patrick,” she added, praising the actor Kang Ki-Young for how easily he shifts from serious to comedic. Narvasa had also been impressed by Secretary Kim and admired how effectively she portrayed different emotions while keeping the cool of the perfect secretary.
“Sana po na-enjoy ninyo. At katulad namin na-in love din kayo at natuwa. At na-feel good din kayo habang pinapanuod ninyo ang mga episodes ng Secretary Kim,” Narvasa ended on a thankful note.
