The infinity ring that Marco (Richard Gomez) gave Emily (Dawn Zuelueta) was a symbol of eternal love, a flame they thought would keep burning forever but ruined by Donya Margaret (Helen Gamboa)’s cunning schemes. Decades later, the estranged lovers crossed each other’s paths, evoking a dark secret about their son, Daniel (Coco Martin), whose heart Marco would try to soften.
As we celebrate Father’s Day, here’s a Toplist displaying Marco’s efforts to reach out to Daniel and win his forgiveness, trust, and love, as seen in Walang Hanggan.
Daniel knew there was an empty space in his heart, a deep sorrowful longing left by his biological parents who he believed abandoned him by choice. Life was still kind enough to give him people who would come close to family like Lola Henya (Susan Roces), who holds the key to his puzzling story.
Fate helped Lola Henya fulfil her mission when Daniel was fostered by Emily, his biological mother. Daniel had nothing but compassion for her Mama Emily when he found out the truth while he felt the opposite towards Marco.
Daniel blamed Marco for his sadness and dark past. He said that Marco ruined everything by not fighting for Emily nor at least buying her side of the story when she got wrongfully accused. Had he consistently visited Emily in jail, Marco would discover her pregnancy and Daniel would’ve grown up in a better environment. “Durog pa rin ang pagkatao ko,” Daniel told Marco, still in denial.
Nevertheless, Marco did not let Daniel’s anger crush his desire to reconcile with him. Marco wanted to become Daniel’s father, to make up for lost time, or start all over again. “Paninindigan kita dahil anak kita,” he told him. The longing father strained his efforts to win Daniel’s trust and he did not stop despite the constant rejection.
Marco would often visit Daniel and try to stir conversations about winemaking – the common passion they share. He would also invite him for dinner, either at the Montenegro mansion or at Emily’s house. He also made a way to soften the relationship between Daniel and his other son, Nathan (Paulo Avelino). Marco gifted Daniel with a handgun which, surprisingly, brought a smile to his face. Eventually, he was able to bring Daniel in a shooting range for a father and son bonding.
Marco and Daniel’s story reminds us that making up for lost time doesn’t require a detailed review of what happened in the past. Sometimes, all a father would need to repay for his shortcomings is the consistent desire to start anew and enjoy the present.
