Joshua Garcia acting evolution

As he continues to evolve in the industry he’s settled in since 2014, Joshua Garcia slowly moves further into the more serious and complex spectrum of teleserye and movie portrayals. He’s no longer just a sweet guy on TV, now becoming the go-to actor for meatier leading man roles such as the one he’s playing in the upcoming Kapamilya series Viral Scandal. Take a look back on his acting journey in this edition of PUSH Evolution.

The love team game begins. It has been a steady climb to stardom for Joshua since entering the Pinoy Big Brother house in 2014 where he was shipped with several female housemates including Loisa Andalio. Thanks to their strong chemistry and fanbase, LoiShua was introduced as a love team right after their PBB stint via afternoon soap Nasaan Ka Nang Kailangan Kita (2015). 

It was the start of Joshua’s quintessential journey to finding the right teammate. For a time, his chemistry with Loisa worked well on TV until he was paired with Kira Balinger in The Greatest Love (2016).

A dramatic actor is born.  Joshua’s acting brilliance was noticed right away. But it was via 2016 afternoon teleserye The Greatest Love where he fully showcased his capabilities as a dramatic actor. Joshua’s acting was no longer just about ‘kilig’ but rather making viewers cry buckets in both the mellow and confrontational scenes with Sylvia Sanchez and Dimples Romana.

The following year, he led the pack of young Kapamilya gentlemen in The Good Son where he’s also reunited with Loisa. He did a wonderful job playing Joseph, the son bent on solving the mystery behind his father’s killing. The hurt, anger, frustration, confusion, Joshua managed to deliver with so much believability and depth.

The next-in-line Rom-Com King. The JoshLia season was in full bloom for a time beginning 2016, and together, Joshua and Julia Barretto got productive in the rom-com genre. Through their box-office flicks, Joshua made us fall for his delightful characters that believe in destiny and crack the most adorable punch lines at the right time.

Joshua even received an accolade, Movie Actor of the Year, at the 33rd PMPC Star Awards for Movies for “Vince and Kath and James,” his first-ever lead movie role. The phenomenal love team brought us “Love You To The Stars and Back,” “Unexpectedly Yours” that also starred Sharon Cuneta and Robin Padilla, and “I Love You Hater” wherein they’re accompanied by Kris Aquino.

In 2019, Joshua took on a new genre, thriller, as JoshLi top billed Mikhail Red’s zombie film “Block Z.”

Edgy, multifaceted characters. After playing mostly ordinary guys on the small screen, Joshua portrayed a wealthy heir for the first time via Ngayon at Kailanman (2018), JoshLia’s first teleserye.

The Killer Bride (2019) was a breath of fresh air for Joshua as he got a new leading lady in Janella Salvador and played knight-in-shining-armor and flower farm owner Elias, the first person to really get invested in Emma (Janella)’s enigmatic life. Bolder and more mature, Joshua had his first on-screen kiss via The Killer Bride!

We’ve seen Joshua play the charming guy trying to win the girl, but, what if he becomes the girl? In an episode of Maalaala Mo Kaya titled “Barbie,” the actor etched his first gay role as Ernesto, an LGBTQIA member who raised a family with his childhood sweetheart Jona (Loisa). To sustain the accuracy of the letter-sender’s story, Joshua had to cross-dress – skimpy outfits, wigs, and heels!

Joshua shined in all his MMK portrayals, the last one as Maro, a fisherman’s son who didn’t give up on his dreams despite life’s obstacles. It may be his first experience of a lock-in taping but Joshua delivered a superb performance despite the limitations and challenges on set, proving his passion and grit as an actor.

This year, Joshua proves once again that he’s in a league of his own via newest Kapamilya series Viral Scandal as the leading man of 2020 MMFF Best Actress Charlie Dizon.
