We are always reminded by our parents or guardians to value our education because not everyone are capable of attaining this kind of privilege, just like Amy Mesias, one of ABS-CBN’s scholars from Sorsogon City, Sorsogon.
Born to an impoverished family who depends on the income her parents get as a laundrywoman (her mom) and as a fisherman (her dad), she’s completely aware of the struggles her father has to go through every time he sails forth in order to bring food to their table. She found it hard not to get emotional as she recalled those moments when he had to work rain or shine and despite having asthma attacks just to make ends meet.
Aside from that, another problem that their family faces is the complete devastation they experience every time a typhoon hits the Bicol region – their house being washed out, having no food, having no money – which forced her to stop studying.
But instead of giving up, she fervently prayed to the heavens to help her lift their family out of poverty and even confidently promised her dad that she’ll build him a mansion someday. Thankfully, her Aunt Emerlita Enfiesta was there to aid them by being her guardian.
An avid viewer of ABS-CBN through the years, Emerlita discovered about Punlaan School while watching a previous Christmas station ID of the Kapamilya network in which it was featured. She enrolled her and they were told that ABS-CBN was going to sponsor her, much to their surprise.
According to their official website, Punlaan School is a “hospitality and culinary school offering scholarship programs with employment right after graduation.” It has been providing “holistic education and training to women from all walks of life, without discrimination of creed or social background. It aims especially to help women with fewer means to acquire the general culture and the specific formation needed to work in tourism-related establishments”. It is owned and operated by the non-stock, non-profit organization The Foundation for Professional Training, Inc. (FPTI). It establishes academes that aims to provide professional training in the fields of home and institutional services, technology, and management.
And last October 29, Amy was one of the graduates and Kapamilya scholars who completed Senior High School during the 26th Commencement Exercises of Punlaan School. After her on-the-job training, she’s assured to score a job in one of their partners in the industry.
Thus, she and her parents Helen and Andres have nothing but gratitude to the network for helping them build and make their dreams come true.
“Katulad ng paggawa namin ng bahay, unti-unti ko po ulit binubuo ‘yong pangarap ko. Nababago ng ABS-CBN ‘yong buhay ko. Binigyan nila ako ng isang aapakan ko papunta sa pangarap ko po,” she said.
