BINI has just released their pre-debut single, an electro-pop remake of the timeless classic “Da Coconut Nut,” paying homage to its original composer, National Artist Ryan Cayabyab. The song was also originally popularized by Smokey Mountain in 1991. Star Hunt Academy management, headed by Mr. Laurenti M. Dyogi, planned for BINI to perform a mix of original songs and reimagined Filipino gems. While “Da Coconut Nut” was not an obvious choice, the global recognition and covers it had garnered on YouTube showed that it was worth a remake—a challenge that SHA’s Korean partners MU Doctor received well.
Established in 2013 in South Korea, MU Doctor is an esteemed training group with a roster of professionals and experts in vocals and dance. They have helped launched successful idol careers, producing over 300 trainees fielded out to various entertainment companies including YG and JYP. Famous K-Pop stars who have trained under MU Doctor include Mino (WINNER), Hye-bin (Momoland), Hyojung (Oh My Girl), I.M (Monsta X), Changbin (Stray Kids), and Kim Sohee (Produce 101). MU Doctor worked with Korean musical producer VO3E, transforming “Da Coconut Nut” from what was then a novelty song into a fresh, upbeat, and danceable banger— a re-engineering of a Filipino classic. Seasoned Korean dance coaches Moon Yeon Joo and Kwak Seong Chan, who have worked with big names such as BTS, Twice, Red Velvet, and Seventeen, helped with the choreography.
The “Da Coconut Nut” music video debuts on YouTube on November 20.
