A group of Manobo tribesmen sought out the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the Movie and Television Review and Classifications Board (MTRCB) to complain about ABS-CBN’s alleged misuse of the word “Bagani” in their new teleserye. The Manobos said they want the TV network to do 3 things – “Una, palitan yung title ng teleserye. Or number two, they rewrite the script na may reverence talaga sa tunay na Bagani at pangatlo, maglalagay sila ng disclaimer every airing nila ng show that they have not portrayed the Bagani na associated sa mga Manobo.”
Meanwhile, ABS-CBN has released their statement on the matter and said the concept of “Bagani” is to feature warriors, protectors, and heroes who espouse Filipino values and beliefs. It also reiterated it has no intention to malign or disrespect any beliefs of Indigenous People’s communities. It also said “Bagani” is a fantaserye and does not represent itself as a historical account of Philippine history or culture.
