As we grew up with a television to entertain and inform us, an ABS-CBN show has touched or influenced us at one point of our lives – may that be a news program, variety or talk show, a comedy, or of course, a teleserye.
However, an avid viewer proudly declared that Kapamilya shows have not only been a pastime or a form of amusement, but also a source of inspiration in facing the challenges of his teleserye-like life.
Anthony Bendo keeps in both mind and heart the important values and nuggets of wisdom he learned from the stories he watched and turning the dialogues and quotes he picked up as his ‘lifelines’.
Quote he lived by: “Becky, wala tayong magagawa. Magpapakatatag ako, kakayanin kong mabuhay.”
Anthony lived a simple life with his Overseas Filipino Worker dad and school teacher mom. When his father came back to the Philippines and never went back to his overseas job, their family predicament started. For them to make both ends meet, his father worked as a jeepney driver while the young Anthony helped by babysitting their neighbors’ children. During those trying times, he found himself in the ever-popular character of the classic anime series dubbed in Filipino Princess Sarah, which touched our hearts on its Philippine TV premiere in 1993 and rebroadcasts in the following years, who like him underwent a lot of hardships at a very young age.
Maalaala Mo Kaya: “Rubber Shoes”
Quote he lived by: “Kahit mahirap lang kayo, naipakita niya sa’yo na mahal ka niya. Pinipilit niyang magawa ang lahat para pagtapusin ka.”
At the same time, the first-ever episode of Maalaala Mo Kaya entitled “Rubber Shoes” and topbilled by Romnick Sarmenta helped him realize how her parents were still able to send them to school despite having meager resources. He went on to share that there were instances as well when they had to share a bowl of ginataan just to complete a meal.
Quote he lived by: (Mylene Dizon) “Kasi ang mga magulang ko, ‘di katulad ng mga magulang mo na may mataas na pinag-aralan, na may alam tungkol sa social graces… (Patrick Garcia) Buti nga parents mo e, ‘di naghihiwalay. Nagmamahalan.”
The 90s teen-oriented series Gimik was also able to instill a valuable lesson in him through the character of then-teen actress Mylene Dizon, Melanie, a young probinsyana who moved from the province to Manila to pursue Nursing via a scholarship and working part-time in a video shop.
This particular scene urged Anthony to study harder as way of repaying his parents sacrifices and to give them back the comfortable life they used to have. Armed with the inspiration he got from his family and the teleseryes he had seen, as well as his greatest ambition of landing a job in the network, their hardships and efforts eventually paid off when he completed his Mass Communications degree and graduated cum laude.
Be Careful With My Heart
Quote he lived by: ‘Pag may nagsaradong pintuan, may bintana. ‘Pag nagsarado ‘yong bintana, may pintuan pa sa kusina. ‘Pag pati ‘yon nagsarado, madali na lang butasin ‘yong bintana.”
However, it seemed that the universe already has a different plan for him as he wasn’t able to make it to his dream company. Instead of getting discouraged, he used this setback to fuel his determination to support his family by working in a call center, which is his line of work for 15 years now
Thus, Anthony could truly relate with the vivacious main protagonist Maya Dela Rosa, played by Jodi Sta. Maria in the phenomenal daytime series Be Careful With My Heart. Maya did everything she could in order to make her dreams come true and to fulfill her promise of a better life to her beloved family.
Like Maya, his parents raised him to have a positive outlook in life, which he continues to exude. As he chooses to be optimistic and to see things with utmost sanguinity, he was able to achieve his once far-fetched dreams.
Maalaala Mo Kaya: Orasan
Quote he lived by: “Mapapagod, pero di po susuko. Mabibigo, pero hinding-hindi bibitaw.”
If there’s one thing he would probably tell other people when it comes to reaching their ambitions and hitting their goals, it would be the remarkable, arousing line delivered by Zaijan Jaranilla (written above) when he portrayed the diligent son Jarel Tadio in the “Orasan” episode of MMK last year.
“Every stage of my life, ABS-CBN is a part of it until now. 'Yong mga characters nila, 'yong mga linya nila, laging parang kinakausap ka at may itinuturo sa'yo na pwede mong panghawakan habang lumalaki ka. 'Yan po ang binuo sa akin ng ABS-CBN, kung bakit ko natamo ngayon ang buhay na ito,” Anthony declared.
May the stories ABS-CBN feature through its programs, either true-to-life or fictional, be able to motivate you as well our dear Kapamilyas as you go through life, just like what they did to Anthony.
