Mission Possible featured the inspiring story of Nanay Elsa and daughter Sarah, whose disabilities did not stop them from aiming to fulfill their dreams of a better life.
Life itself is already difficult. But, what more if you have to go through it as a handicap?
And that’s how the incredible mother-daughter tandem of Nanay Elsa Badilla and Sarah touched us after their inspiring story was featured on the news and current affairs program Mission Possible more than a year ago.
After her husband abandoned them many years ago, Nanay Elsa had to raise their two children singlehandedly by taking care of them and, at the same time, working in order to provide all their needs. While juggling her duties that time was already hard, their plight worsened after she was diagnosed with glaucoma in 2010. Since her income then wasn’t enough to suffice their needs, she had to set aside her medication, which resulted to her blindness.
Since then, it’s been her Down Syndrome-stricken daughter Sarah, who has been her constant companion wherever they go. Instead being the one to spearhead their journeys, the 54-year-old visually impaired mom is the one being assisted by her daughter as they go to school every day. Doing this is indeed dangerous and costly, but her pursuit to give Sarah a better future fuels her to still do it as long as they can.
Their harrowing plight almost made her give up and end her own life, but thankfully, she did not surrender. Little did she know that after some years, a lot of people would extend their hand to them without expecting anything return after Mission Possible researcher Michael Roxas found out about their heartwarming and inspiring story.
Led by veteran broadcast journalist and host Julius Babao, the Mission Possible team visited them in March 2018 in order to get to know their family even further and to also give them gifts that has truly helped them in their daily living.
And almost a month after their last encounter, the Mission Possible team paid them a visit again last December 2018 to check them out and bestow a grander present to them – a new and comfortable abode in Art to Heart GK Village, Amparo, Caloocan City.
Apart from that, they were also able to reunite Nanay Elsa with her niece Apple Manito, who used to live with them in 2008, as she yearned to express her gratitude personally after seeing them featured online.
The story of Nanay Elsa and Sarah only reminds us that no matter how difficult our lives might be, we should always keep our positive outlook in life and our faith in God burning because, as cliché as it may sound, no challenge will be given to us that we cannot overcome. Everything happens for a reason and always believe that it’s always for our good.
Besides, Nanay Elsa is a great reminder as well of a mother’s undying love towards her children. Regardless of how tough the situation will be, mothers like Nanay Elsa will always be the shining, warm light of our homes – guiding us and taking care of us unconditionally.
