After two decades of living in the States, Sheryn Regis is back in the Philippines for good, citing her career as the biggest motivation for coming home. She hinted at a failed marriage with her ex-husband but the singer wished not to talk about it yet. The important thing is her heart remains full of love because of daughter, Sweety. The Crystal Voice of Asia opened the interview by belting out her classic hit “Kailan Kaya”.
Looking back on what happened over the past years, Sheryn revealed that she went home to Cebu in 2016 and was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. “Alam mo ‘yung hindi mo malaman kung iiyak ka o magugulat o sisigaw ka na lang. Noong time na ‘yun, kumanta lang ako at biglang pagod na pagod ako na gusto ko nang mahimatay, tapos ‘yun na pala ‘yun” tapos may bukol ako dito [in the throat], she recalled.
Sheryn knew that she needed to undergo an immediate medical operation to save her life despite the fear of losing her singing voice after the surgery. “A very good doctor in Cebu, pinatugtog ‘yung “Come On In Out of The Rain” while nagsu-surgery siya sa akin para raw makonsensya sila na huwag matamaan ‘yung laryngeal nerve. Then they told me na kailangan kakanta ako after six months,” the singer shared. But she couldn’t imagine herself taking a six-month off from singing. “Buhay ko ang pagkanta, so after a month or three weeks, kumanta ako for Sto. Nino and I told, ‘It’s because of my faith, kakanta ako at gagaling ako,’” said the all-out performer. True to her faithful claim, Sheryn is now cancer-free.
Her life in Houston still revolved mainly around the world of entertainment. Apart from singing, she also hosted a magazine talk show, “Chit Chat Houston.” Sheryn also decided to pursue a teaching profession in the States until Sweety persuaded her to come back to the Philippines.
After singing the chorus part of ““Come On In Out of The Rain,” Sheryn took on the Fast Talk Challenge. She named Regine Velasquez as the greatest singer in the Philippines. She doesn’t lip sync. If given the chance to audition for The Voice of the Philippines, she would pick Sarah Geronimo as her coach. Sheryn denied having a real-life rivalry with Erik Santos, her fellow Star in A Million contender in 2003.
