After the success of “Kinky Boots,” singer-composer and theater actor Nyoy Volante has recently been back on stage via musical play “Sweeney Todd.” He takes on the role of Adolfo, the male antagonist. Sweeney Todd also features Jett Pangan and Lea Salonga whom Boy Abunda believes is worthy of being hailed a national artist. The said theatrical show will be re-staged in Singapore starting on November 28.
Nyoy is also joined by wife and theater actress, Mikkie Bradshaw-Volante in “Sweeney Todd.” His daughter, Sophie, has always been a fan of his musical performances. In fact, the young girl fell in love with Nyoy’s character in “Kinky Boots” that she even wanted to have a sibling like ‘Lola’.
Aside from “Sweeney Todd,” Nyoy is part of the movie titled “Damaso” which also stars Aiko Melendez and recently evicted Tawag ngTanghalan All-Star Ultimate Resbak contender Marlo Mortel.
The TNT hurados were criticized when Marlo ended up defeated on the first day of the Ultimate Resbak Edition. As a long-time jury, Nyoy has gotten himself used to receiving negative reactions from the viewers. He learned to widen his perspective, saying the audience holds the right to root for anyone they wish to. Nyoy explains that the TNT judging system relies on a consensus among the hurados.
Netizens notice Nyoy’s resemblance with the American actor Noah Centineo. When asked for a reaction about it, Nyoy simply downplays the compliments. “Lokohan lang ‘yan. That guy is a hunk!” he said.
The interview ends with Nyoy strumming the guitar strings while singing two of his most LSS-inducing compositions, “Someday” and “Nasaan Ka Na”. The music genius gave birth to “Someday” taking from his personal experience. Besides, he wanted to create an anthem for broken-hearted people who deserve to find true love from someone better.
Meanwhile, the inspiration behind “Nasaan Ka Na” sprouted on Nyoy’s mind on a random hour – while looking for the bath soap. “I was humming that particular tune. Then, I took a bath. So, while still humming, hinahanap ko ‘yung sabon. Lumabas agad ako ng banyo to record that particular line,” shared Nyoy.
Nyoy also gave a few lines from one of his most recent compositions dedicated to his lovely wife, Mikkie. “Pakinggan mo ang awit ko na naisulat dahil sa kagandahan mo”, says the lyrics of the kilig song.
