When talking about the UST Golden Tigresses, one of the first players that instantly comes to mind is Cherry Ann Rondina, also known as “Sisi”. She was the UST volleyball team captain who poured all her heart in bringing her school into glory through her incredible moves especially her dazzling spikes in the recent UAAP Season 81.
The champ was even able to set a new milestone for the UST Golden Tigresses via her career-high 35 points in the recently concluded Finals Games. Although, the championship trophy has slipped away from the UST once again, others say Cherry Ann’s golden MVP win and the first finals game in eight years were more than enough.
But, surprisingly, Sisi says volleyball wasn’t her first love in the athletics department. She first tried doing track and field but she was inevitably drawn into taking volleyball more seriously. “Naadik,” was the term she used while describing her relationship with the said sports.
“Holding that ball, masasabi talagang ‘It’s a life’. Volleyball is a bridge to opportunities. Naging tulay siya para makumpleto ang pamilya namin at makapagtapos ang kapatid ko sa pag-aaral. Ang dami kong natutunan sa bolang ito,” relates the MVP.
Sisi considers her family as her biggest source of strength. She also draws inspiration from Don Alo, her former classmate and now boyfriend of nineteen months. Don is not into athletics but he is blessed with a good sense of humor which helped him win the volleyball champ’s heart.
Her current status as a sports superstar doesn’t get into her head and it doesn’t also affect her relationship with Don. “I’m not a superstar. Treat me like ako pa rin. Siguro humahanga lang ang mga tao at humahanga lang di sila sa sports na nilalaro namin,” she once told Don.
