Manila’s Queen of Soul Ella May Saison and The Powerhouse Diva Dessa blended their singing prowess as they open the interview with a short but sweet rendition of “’Till My Heartaches End.” The two contemporaries used to dominate the ‘90s music stage until they decided to live in the United States. Ella May denied the assumption that her love life prompted her to leave. She simply wanted to hibernate for a while, and added that she had a lovely time abroad where life was simpler. On the other hand, Dessa left to ‘follow her heart’, saying she moved to the United States to build a family.
Yet, even after long years of absence from the local music scene, Dessa and Ella May’s songs remain timeless. Ella May delivered a few lines from her classic hit, “Till My Heartaches End” while Dessa belted out “Lipad Ng Pangarap”. A powerful duet of Aretha Franklin’s “Respect” followed.
As treats to their loyal supporters and other music lovers, Ella May and Dessa are having their Valentines shows titled “Lovethrowback3” and “Powerhouse Valentine,” respectively. When asked if they ever disliked each other in the past, the divas clarified that they never took the competition personally.
Capping off the episode with the Fast Talk Segment, Ella May named Gary Valenciano as the sexiest man in the Philippines. Other than Dessa, Ella May also picked Regine Velasquez and Morisette Amon as among the best singers in the country.
Dessa belted out “I Will Always Love You” when asked about the best song to accompany her romantic moments with her husband. Dessa looked back on how Regine Velasquez supported her when she was just starting out in the industry.
