Spectators would see undeniable grace and allure behind the swag athletic moves of Michele Gumabao on the volleyball court. It was also hard to ignore her wit and poise during sports-related interviews. That’s why she’s long been persuaded to join beauty pageants. However, Michele would turn down the idea until she reached 25.
A year prior to joining the Binibining Pilipinas 2018 pageant, Michele was introduced to “queen-maker” Jonas Gafud. She suddenly felt the fire burning, prompting her aunt Isabel Rivas, who was also hands-on with the trainings of her beauty queen cousin Kristine Florendo, to get involve in her journey. It was a joint family effort since joining the pageant was a tough decision to begin with.
“I prepared mentally. Binibini for me was a big risk and I prepared by consulting my family first because being the bread winner of the family, it’s hard to make decisions just based on your own dreams,” she told TWBA host Boy Abunda in an interview after her win as the 2018 Miss Globe-Philippines.
As an athlete and the bread winner, Michele is used to making sacrifices. But unlike competing for a volleyball championship, joining Binibining Pilipinas demanded more time and effort. She had to put her life on hold for almost three months. She took a break from events, coaching, and hosting gigs – basically her usual grind – which is why she calls Binibining Pilipinas as a huge investment.
Fortunately, her family’s love made it easier for her. “They were very supportive. Ako pa yung naging hesitant at first. Not only will I sacrifice. I’m used to sacrificing, I’m an athlete. But I don’t like my family to experience it or to sacrifice for me,” shared Michele.
The Daddy’s girl consults her father, Dennis Roldan, in every decision she makes. She had his promise of a support system and that was enough of an assurance.
Michele didn’t fail the fans who watched her glow from the court to the pageant stage. She secured the Miss Globe-Philippines title in the 2018 Binibining Pilipinas competition. During this interview, she said pageant sister Miss Globe 1st runner-up Nelda Ibe will be sharing tips.
By the manner she embraced her new world and all the endless possibilities awaiting her, Michele already proved that she is a true queen – brave and empowered.
