Singer Jessa Zaragoza is considered as one of OPM’s pillars but even veteran musicians like her also experiences problems relating to their biggest instrument – the voice. In an interview with the King of Talk Boy Abunda, Jessa revealed undergoing a vocal cords surgery last year due to the presence of polyps, which she described as akin to varicose veins.
According to her doctor, her voice may have been overused through the years; hence, the injury. Instead of crying in self-pity and hopelessness, the incident even made Jessa stronger in faith. “Lord, kung sakaling babawiin mo na sa akin itong pinahiram mong gift, tatanggapin ko”, she prayed.
Jessa had to stop using her voice for two weeks after the operation. Her situation made her more driven to pursue her advocacy in spreading sign language awareness for the deaf and mute community. After four months, Jessa’s voice was back to normal and she now looks back at the ‘tragedy’ as a humbling experience.
To prove that she’s still the Jessa Zaragoza who triumphed in the music scene through her distinct musical style, Jessa sang her own rendition of Jayda’s “Happy for You,” Yeng Constantino’s “Ikaw,” and Moira dela Torre’s “Tagpuan”.
Jessa is set to display her singing prowess in a musical collaboration with Richard Poon on June 8 entitled “Just Right: The Diva and The Crooner.” The concert is going to be filled with old classic songs blended by modern taste courtesy of guest artists Jayda Zaragoza and Jeremy Glinoga.
