Tonight with Boy Abunda welcomes Paul Soriano, known for directing popular films such as Thelma (2011), Kid Kulafu (2015) and Dukot (2016). This year, he takes on his first romantic film with First Love, starred by Aga Muhlach and Bea Alonzo. The award-winning director and producer takes on the TWBA hot seat to talk all things “first love”—including his life as a director, as a husband to Toni Gonzaga and as a father to their son, Seve.
The King of Talk asks Paul about his profession, inquiring on the best part about being a director. Direk Paul answers that the great thing about being a director is that it allows him to unleash his ideas and imaginations. When Tito Boy asks what matters more between the viewers and acting awards, the director honestly conveys that he does films for himself. He reasons that it’s hard to please everyone and know what every moviegoer would like in a film and so he made it a point to create films for himself so whether or not it flops or succeeds, he can say it was his vision and direction, and is something he’s proud of.
On talks of the ABS-CBN Ball 2018 last September 29, Paul explains the reason behind his and his wife’s absence during the grand event and tells how they had already booked that weekend to fly to Los Angeles in time for Seve’s birthday. The director expresses the importance of letting Seve see the place where he grew up and that although he understands his son may not be able to verbalize the importance of the event yet, Paul believes it’ll be a significant part of his development as a person.
The director also shares his love for the classic film, E.T. and how he and Seve went to a wax museum there to take a photo on its iconic bike. Direk Paul admits that the movie paved the way for his love for directing and films.
