Tonight with Boy Abunda welcomes Paul Soriano, known for directing popular films such as Thelma (2011), Kid Kulafu (2015) and Dukot (2016). This year, he takes on his first romantic film with First Love, starred by Aga Muhlach and Bea Alonzo. The award-winning director and producer takes on the TWBA hot seat to talk all things “first love”—including his life as a director, as a husband to Toni Gonzaga and as a father to their son, Seve.
The King of Talk asks Paul about his profession, inquiring on the best part about being a director. Direk Paul answers that the great thing about being a director is that it allows him to unleash his ideas and imaginations. When Tito Boy asks what matters more between the viewers and acting awards, the director honestly conveys that he does films for himself. He reasons that it’s hard to please everyone and know what every moviegoer would like in a film and so he made it a point to create films for himself so whether or not it flops or succeeds, he can say it was his vision and direction, and is something he’s proud of.
Tito Boy then asks the best and worst thing said to him as a director to which Paul replies that he’s told many times that he’s hard-headed and stubborn. However, he notes that he’s a good collaborator and loves listening to ideas and compromising with them if it’s for the betterment of the film.
On being a father, Paul shares that Toni tells him that he’s the best father: someone who’s very hands-on and protective over Seve. On the worse, he expresses that it’s when he has to be away from him for months due to work and miss some of his milestones. The King of Talk also asks about the best and worst for him as a husband, to which Paul admits that he’s a work in progress and needs to be a better listener. He also conveys his desire to have one more child with his wife.
After talking about his film, Paul is challenged to do 5 in 45 and list down the 5 things he wants to hear from his wife, Toni. Paul then says that he wants Toni to tell him that he’s the best listener; that he’s the best lover; that he makes box-office-hit films; that he’d always follow his heart and dreams; and lastly that if he decides to move back to Los Angeles, Toni would agree to come with him.
