When Kuya Jobert made his first ever appearance on Tonight with Boy Abunda, fans were probably not expecting an emotional ride. The man who usually makes people laugh with his silly antics, made fans tear up instead.
Jobert Austria initially gained fame through hilarious YouTube videos. He was initially reluctant to do it but was convinced by one of his friends. He didn’t plan to join the entertainment industry. In fact, he’s natural very shy “kumportable akong magpatawa kapag kakilala ko ‘yong kaharap ko”. Kuya Jobert only got over it because he falls into a trance, “basta nakikinig sila, hindi na nga alam kung ano sinasabi ko”he explained. Since then, a decade into his career, he now regularly appears on Banana Sundae, Home Sweetie Home, FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano, and even has his own show Sagot ka ni Kuya Jobert.
Life, however, was not always easy for him. He used to take on any job. From singing in bars to waiting tables, he has done it all. There was even a point when he was forced to live in broken down jeepney for two years with his son, Myron. Kuya Jobert shared that he never wanted to ask for help from anyone because he didn’t want to be a burden to his friends.
Eventually, thanks to his passion for making people happy, he found himself as one of the funniest actors in Philippine television. Unfortunately, he went to a whole new level of rock bottom when he let the money get to his head. In 2014, he made headlines when he attempted to commit suicide. The comedian lost trust in people, became lonely and delusional. At his breaking point, he was scared and only wanted to escape. Literally at the edge, it was Eric Nicolas who pulled him back to reality.
“Akala ko palagi akong tama. Sila pala ‘yong malaking sakripisyo,” he said expressing his regret for almost giving up on his family. He realized that his son stood by him through it all, and that was all he needed to get back on his feet. After all that has happened, he keeps in mind to always remember where he started “para hindi mo sayangin kung ano man ‘yong mayroon ngayon”. Kuya Jobert also prays every day and trusts that God will never abandon him.
Now, knowing the lowest of lows in life, he tries his best to be there for his own friends. When Angelica Panganiban needed a friend, he was there for her like a brother “Isang tawag lang, kahit nasaan ako, tatakbuhin ko siya.” And on the topic of John Lloyd Cruz being MIA, he supports him whatever his decision is. “Nanghihinayang ako kasi napakagaling niyang artista,” he said but more than being a fan of his work, he is also a dear friend. As long as his friend is happy, then he is also happy.
This interview has certainly shed a new light on one of our favorite comedians. But there’s more to the episode. Check out this uncut version to hear Kuya Jobert’s full story.
