In 2017, Jake Zyrus’ gender transition has become a hot topic here and abroad, given that the artist has made a name in the international music scene through his previous identity as Charice Pempengco. Introducing himself in his new identity wasn’t easy. Challenges and intrigues were thrown at him but Jake remained strong and true to himself.
In an interview on Tonight with Boy Abunda originally aired on June 2017, Jake was prompted to stare at his own reflection in the show’s famous golden mirror. When asked to describe the young man he was seeing, Jake related how the trials molded him into a stronger individual, unabashed by the circumstances and the public’s opinion. “I guess matapang kasi sa dami-daming struggles na nangyari sa buhay mo, you’re still here, you’re still standing,” he said as if talking to himself.
Jake added that he is focused on the bigger and more beautiful things ahead. He is looking forward to an exciting future and meeting a new person to love. “To meet new people, new fans, new music, new love, everything. A future. Excited ako sa future mo,” expressed Jake.
As the interview went on, Jake was asked by Tito Boy to give himself a piece of advice. He uttered, “Advice ko sa’yo, as much as possible, hangga’t kaya mo, never give up and love yourself.”
If there’s a song he would like to dedicate to the young man in that mirror, Jake chose to sing “Perfect” by Pink.
