In her book titled “My Journey: The Story of an Unexpected Leader,” former ABS-CBN President and CEO Charo Santos-Concio imparted valuable lessons and inspiring accounts of her journey, both personal and professional.
The iconic woman’s success story has made her a pillar of influence and wisdom in the industry, with a lot of individuals inside and outside the entertainment scene looking up to her as a model and mentor. Just like anyone else who managed to make it to the top, Charo had her fair share of challenges. But she made sure that gender discrimination will never affect her corporate performance.
As empowering as she is, Charo has been loudly vocal about her advocacy on gender equality. She’s always believed that being a woman plays no part in one’s success, thus invalidating the norm that men are more capable leaders. “Why do I have to become a man to be president?” she asked. “Why does a woman have to be a man? Sa lalaki lang ba reserved ‘yung position na ‘yan? I think anyone can be president,” she said in an interview for TWBA first aired on March 2017.
The ABS-CBN Chief Content Officer and University President further asserted that she does not tag herself as just a woman but as a worker, when asked about the challenges she encountered on the way to the top. She also emphasized that a person’s capabilities is not measured by gender alone.
“I will do my work with all passion, commitment and dedication,” she added. “Hindi naman ‘yan dahil sa lalaki ka o babae ka. It’s about character. It’s about your sense of commitment, it’s about the things that you value. It’s about your priorities.”
