What Bela Padilla thought would be just a harmless and rare snapshot turned out to be a bait for bashing. This happened when she uploaded a photo of her with second cousin Daniel Padilla on Instagram. Other fans didn’t like seeing Daniel with another girl even if she’s a close relative, resulting in a parade of malicious hate comments on Bela’s account.
“Parang they were putting color into it. So I deleted those kasi kadiri. Magpinsan kami.”
The issue flared up even more when some netizens started questioning Bela’s relation to the Padilla clan. Others pointed out that she isn’t a Padilla but a ‘Sullivan,’ to which she explains, “I’m a Sullivan because my Dad is British but we’re all the same blood because we’re all Cariños.”
Bela is related to the Padilla clan through her maternal grandmother, Eva Cariño, wife of Roy Padilla Sr., the father of Robin Padilla and grandfather to Daniel. This makes her mom and Robin first cousins; and her and Daniel second cousins.
The Kapamilya actress admits that she would often read articles referring to her as malayong kamag-anak or distant relative of the Padillas. She remains cool about it, as much as possible, but there are times when she gets irked by the never-ending assumptions. “You guys don’t know we all grew up with each other. I would spend summers in Tito Robin’s house. I grew up with his daughters. I feel like, ‘Why does my blood have to be questioned?”
“We all grew up in one compound and we’re all very clannish. Growing up, I didn’t have barkadas so much. What I have are cousins,” adds Bela.
