After a tumultuous battle of revenge between exes Jill (Jodi Sta Maria) and David (Zanjoe Marudo), the focus of The Broken Marriage Vow’s final episode shrinks to Jill’s ultimate heartbreak, and later on, her happy ending – her relationship with son Gio (Zaijian Jaranilla).

Heart-pounding drama

Picking up from David (Zanjoe Marudo)’s karmic downfall, the cheating narcissist’s self-centered thinking pushed him to kidnap his own son, after threatening Jill to keep troubling them for the rest of their lives. Jill arrived at the hotel room where David brought Gio but found the place empty and with broken glasses on the floor, hinting at a possible danger.

Taking clues from the security, Jill dashed to a cliff and there found David on the brink of suicide, with Gio as an audience. Starting to feel traumatized, Gio asked Jill to stop David from jumping off the cliff, which she successfully did.

Haggling with his ex-wife, David demanded Jill's aid in killing himself. She thus handed him a drug that, according to her, would give his heart a painless death.

But after listening to Gio’s conversation with David over the phone, Jill rushed to David’s hotel room and found him unconscious, her calm demeanor puzzling. When he woke up, she explained that the injectable drug was just an antihistamine that causes drowsiness.

Change of heart and closure

David’s new lease on life led to a sentimental conversation with Jill where she enlightened him about his reasons to live – his kids. It was so emotional other viewers thought reconciliation is about to happen. But, to some, the scene served as the much-needed closure to Jill and David’s bitter relationship. Jill finally let go of David, who promised to change himself for his kids.

Jill’s most heart-shattering misery

Jill’s prolonged predicament didn’t end there though. The most devastating one had just started. In her words, “Ang inaakala mong laban, isa lang palang babala.” Gio ran away from home, leaving Jill a video message where he said he’s had enough of their family’s mess and that he wants to rebuild his life by himself.

Viewers witnessed the most agonizing years in Jill’s life spent waiting for Gio to come home. She’s seen updating the hospital’s noticeboard with Gio’s “missing person” poster, wearing his jacket and sleeping on his bed to somewhat feel his presence, and just hoping to see him again soon.

Heartfelt ending

Matched by the sentimentality of Baguio’s dreamy sceneries, the series’ final episode witnessed new chapters unfold in the lives of the main characters. Lexy (Sue Ramirez) returned to Baguio with her parents Fred (Art Acuna) and Nathalia (Rachel Alejandro), and her daughter Kylie. Among the three key players in the story, it seems Lexy got the easiest route to a happy ending despite her bad record as a home-wrecker.

As for David, it has been a struggle to find a job without his past connections and the stigma of his scandal. And this affects his promise to become a better man. There were probably a few eye-rolling among viewers when David walked out and threw his portfolio down the trash during a supposed job interview. We understand the frustration over being judged for his past. But, can he not become as determined as his ex-wives? David needs to man up if he wants a reformed relationship with his kids, both of whom he estranged himself from.

Meanwhile, incurable romantics content themselves imagining sunny possibilities about Jill and Gabby (Jake Ejercito)’s love story. In their last scene together, he dropped her home, she thanked him, and then, he cupped her face and said “anytime.”

The final scene witnessed Jill preparing the table one morning. Somebody rang the doorbell. It was none other than Gio. Jill broke down into tears, and we viewers cried with her, as she finally received the only kind of happy ending she’s hoping for – Gio finally coming home.

Quiet dramatic scenes and lessons learned

While the series had created exciting confrontations and scenes packed with big emotions in the earlier episodes, it was also mesmerizing to feel the tempo naturally flow into quiet sentimentality. Others might find it dry but, honestly, it needed to be calm for things to hit really hard.

It was in the quietest moment when Jill’s pain felt too palpable. That’s where we easily grasped the message Jill wanted to impart through her tears that struck a familiar chord in mothers’ hearts, especially those who built from the wreckage of a broken marriage. It made viewers care about her fate as she muses on the damage that Gio suffered through her and David’s toxic separation. Jill also reminded us that life is all about choices, and accountability.

We praise Jodi’s divine ability to display her emotions even without dialogues. The visuals and cinematography add to the 'feels' she paints.

The ensemble cast's acting prowess combined into a compelling harmony. Zanjoe easily switched personas from arrogant to sheepish. It was impossible not to hate him in the beginning but you’d also feel a pinch of pity at the end. Zaijian was very raw in every scene. You’d clearly understand whether his tears fell out of anger, hurt, or trauma. While Sue and Jake only had quick appearances in the final episodes, we can’t deny the refreshing energy they added to the show’s last moments.

Netizens’ Reaction

With its emotional and unexpected ending, The Broken Marriage Vow’s Heart-Shattering Finale received appreciation from viewers and netizens. Comments about Jodi’s exceptional acting flooded the internet.

They were able to reflect on the lessons infused in the teleserye.

Praises for the whole team!
