He is a journeyman. A handyman who sharpens handsaws for carpenters. A “manunulatatay ng Bukidnon”. Yet one thing keeps him apart—he’s a singer with that spine-tingling, powerful voice, reminiscent of classic rock band frontmen.
Though he knows he has the talent and has joined Tawag Ng Tanghalan previously yet fell short of completing his goal, Ato Arman never lost that faith in himself and the hope to finally prevail.
After a long, bumpy journey, Ato finally achieved what it seen as the final step towards reaching his dreams, entering the Grand Finals of Season 2 of Tawag ng Tanghalan. And this he attained after being the top Ultimate Resbaker with an astonishing perfect score in the final showdown.
Let’s look back at his winning moments as a daily champion in the current season of the competition.
Who could forget his impressive comeback on Tawag Ng Tanghalan with this rendition of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin” in the hope of again reclaiming the Golden Microphone?
And he did seize it with yet another Journey cover, “Separate Ways,” from no less than current Grand Finalist Tuko delos Reyes during his time as a daily defending champion.
His powerful, soaring voice surely astounded hurados, the studio audience and the viewers, especially with this second serving of a Journey song, “Faithfully.”
He retained the daily crown with that performance.
For the third straight day, Ato’s fascination for anything Journey is without letup as he sang the ballad “Open Arms” to the delight of everyone.
And remained as the defending champion.
In his fourth day as champion, he utilized his mastery of Journey hits to the hilt with a powerful version of “After All These Years.”
And he still held on to the crown.
By Day 5, Ato tried another rock ballad, Queen’s “Too Much Love Could Kill You”, which also brought the house down.
With it, he became a five-day champion and qualified for the semifinals.
Ato then made a turning point in his covers by singing Jovit Baldovino’s “Sana’y Magbalik” on the sixth day of his reign, proving his dominance.
And took home the daily title.
Ato kept his winning ways on the seventh day, with his version of previous Tawag ng Tanghalan grand champion Noven Belleza’s “Tumahan Ka Na.”
He remained the champion for seven days straight,
But on the eighth day, Ato’s fortunes went sour when after singing Jovit Baldovino’s “Paano,” he lost the daily championship to Leyte’s Junreal Olarte.
Ato then gave an admirable showing in the semifinals before bowing out in the end, a misfortune he thought would end his dream again. But then the chance of the lifetime came as he among the Ultimate Resbakers given the fresh opportunity to vie for a slot for the Grand Finals.
And the Ultimate Resbaker that he really is, Ato didn’t disappoint as he ended up in the seat of power by the final showdown.
And in his face-off with fellow Resbakers Arabelle dela Cruz and Mark Michael Garcia, he gave his best performance to date: a stirring rendition of Freddie Aguilar’s “Bulag, Pipi, at Bingi,” a performance that gave him a perfect score of 100% from both the hurados and the viewers through text and online voting.
After topping the Ultimate Resbak showdown, Ato fulfilled his goal of inching closer to his dream of being the Tawag Ng Tanghalan Season 2 Grand Champion.
Ato and the other Grand Finalists will meet in Ang Huling Tapatan all next week, with the naming of the Season 2 Grand Winner on Saturday, June 2 on Tawag Ng Tanghalan on It’s Showtime.
