From working behind the scenes as a program researcher, John “Sweet” Lapus transitioned into an on-cam talent with ease, thanks to his skill, creativity, and amiability. He has this magical connection with his audience, as if he knows exactly what their taste is, what they’d like to watch.
He became known as Sweet after appearing in the ABS-CBN sitcom “Arriba Arriba” headlined by Jolina Magdangal. And from there, he’s starred in various television and movie projects. As Director Jojo Saguin puts it, Sweet is able to offer something new to his audience, twist his portrayal in such a way that it’d look different from the previous one even if they’re all gay characters.
Not the type to rest on his laurels, Sweet has ventured into directing. And we’re pretty sure he’ll still go places from here.
His commitment to his craft, and unbreakable relationship with Star Magic for 22 years, was honored in the Star Magical Christmas 2023 event last Sunday, November 19. He was presented a Loyalty Award alongside six other Star Magic stalwarts.
Sweet turned sentimental imparting his message in front of his Star Magic family. “Nag-gold po talaga ako tonight kasi I just turned 50 last July. This is to remind myself to be proud that almost half of my life I am a proud Star Magic artist. Why? Because my dear brothers and sisters in Star Magic, please remember loyalty is always returned.”
Unable to fight back the tears, he continued, “Sa sobrang loyal ko sa Star Magic kusa na nila akong ibinibenta na parang isda sa palengke sa lahat ng producers, directors, boss na kilala nila because, after all sa totoo lang alam ng Star Magic kung sino ang nangangailangan sa atin ng trabaho at hindi natin kailangang magsabi.”

Sweet appealed to Star Magic’s most prized talents to help carry their fellow artists, especially the newbies, into better opportunities. In that way, the whole Star Magic community will be able to solidify its presence in the entertainment industry.

"To the superstars of Star Magic, you know who you are, it is with your very presence that Star Magic is still here surviving and hopefully here to stay. Kaya naman gusto ko sanang umapela sa superstars ng Star Magic to recommend, request, suggest your kapatids in Star Magic, especially the new ones to your producers, to your directors, to your bosses. Makikinig sila sa inyo, superstar kayo. Promise hindi naman kayo mapapahiya. Kapag more than half of the Star Magic artists may trabaho, quota na po tayo,” he said.
