Paulo Avelino reacts to his past TV portrayals, muses on growth as an actor

Paulo Avelino is never scared to step out of his comfort zone as an actor. And this boldness, seasoned by passion and experience, brought out his most flawless and versatile performances on TV – from Walang Hanggan (2012) to On The Wings of Love (2015), The General’s Daughter (2019), and Marry Me Marry You (2021).

Kapamilya React asked Paulo to re-watch his remarkable scenes from the said teleseryes, and here’s what he had to say.

Paulo remembered how tricky it was to play Nathan, the villain with psychotic tendencies, in Walang Hanggan. The most difficult part was switching emotions as Nathan can transition from romantic to terrifying and dangerous. Too much was happening under the surface of Nathan’s character but Paulo had to blend well with the script’s tempo.

Nonetheless, he enjoyed portraying the role, “It was exciting to do because it was something different. I had a bit of freedom to play with my character.” Add to that the fun bonding moments with his co-stars including veterans Susan Roces, Richard Gomez, Dawn Zulueta, and the show’s lead loveteam Coco Martin and Julia Montes.

“Aside from being professional, minsan ‘yung patience rin sa set, eh. Makikita mo kasi na kung kaya ng mga veteran actors natin na maghintay hanggang umaga, gawin ang lahat para sa ikagaganda ng ekena, parang it teaches us young actors as well,” he said.

Paulo added charm and spice to the JaDine-starrer On The Wings of Love in 2015 as Leah (Nadine Lustre)’s boss, Simon (Paulo Avelino). He entered in the latter season, thus basing his acting on what was available in the script.

Viewers remember Simon for his unexpected chemistry with Leah. Looking back, Paulo said the chemistry wasn’t that premeditated, “The chemistry was technically worked on sa set na mismo. Nandon naman si [Direk] Tonette [Jadaone] to guide us if it’s working or not.”

Paulo remembers the OTWOL set as one of the most relaxed environments he’s worked in. He also will not forget that the show brought him to Lake Tahoe for the first time.

From heavy drama to rom-com, we move next to action. Paulo starred opposite Angel Locsin in the military drama The General’s Daughter, where he impressed viewers in action-packed performances. He was Franco, the syndicate member whose loyalty to the group is shaken by his feelings for Rhian (Angel). We showed him his and Angel’s sparring scene that ended in a kiss.

For this particular series, his fondest memories are the bruises and wounds, “Ang dami kong sugat na nakuha dito. Naalala ko lang, takbo ako nang tabo non-stop. Si Angel, sanay na sanay siya with everything. She uses the enemies’ force towards her to take advantage of it. Ako naman, parang bruskong-brusko lang.”

From his recent teleserye, Marry Me Marry You, where he played Janine Gutierrez’s boss-turned-husband, we showed him a clip of their sexy but funny love scene. to which he reacted, “Medyo awkward itong eksena na ‘to. Lahat naman ng love scenes, for me, are awkward to shoot. But of course, it’s needed in the story.”

Asked for some trivia about the scene, he joked, “Parang gusto-gusto lang makita ni Janine ‘yung chubby kong katawan nung panahon na ‘yan.”

It has been a decade since Paulo became a bonafide Kapamilya. Through the years, he never ran out of surprises when it comes to playing a character. And he credits life itself for handing him lessons and experiences that help nourish his acting mettle.

“Acting is like being human. As you go along with life and learn more tuff and experience more, then it can help you shape and it will make things easier for you as an actor, or broaden your mind or your scope as an actor,” said Paulo.
