She’s been active in the local entertainment scene ever since she began in 14 years ago. And through the years, we’ve witnessed how Kim Chiu tremendously flourished from being a promising teen star to becoming one of the seasoned actresses in the country at present. From delighting us with her teeny bopper roles, she’s now astounding us with her more mature portrayals, such as in her latest project Love Thy Woman.
In the upcoming Kapamilya Gold drama, she would play the lead female protagonist named Jia Wong, who’s going to be the archrival of her half-sister not only to the affection and attention of their patriarch and to their family’s wealth, but to the one man they would both love. As her half-sister lies comatose, Jia’s bound to get closer to her husband and would eventually be his mistress.
But before we get to finally see her as Jia starting February 10, let’s take a trip down memory lane and revisit the previous roles she exceptionally took on through the years via this Kapamilya Spotlight feature.
Right from the first time that we saw her on television through her memorable and victorious stint in the inaugural season of the Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition, we’ve already fallen in love with the “Chinese Cutie of Cebu”.
Kim didn’t only become a Big Winner in the reality show, but even in the outside world as her showbiz career began to skyrocket, too! As soon as she stepped out of the house, she was welcomed by her huge throng of supporters and a string of projects both on television and film.
Alongside her loveteam partner Gerald Anderson, they starred in the weekly anthologies Star Magic Presents: Ang Lovey Kong All-Around, Maalaala Mo Kaya (“Bus” episode), Your Song Presents (“Bitin Sa Iyo” and “Alive”), and Love Spell Presents (“My Boy, My Girl”, “Charm & Crystal”, and “Pasko Na Sinta Ko”). They’re also among the cast of the sitcom Aalog-alog, wherein she played Kim Chan Sukimura, the unica hija of Pokwang’s character.
She and Gerald had their teleserye debut via the primetime romance drama Sana Maulit Muli, in which they depicted young lovers Jasmin Sta. Maria and Travis Johnson. Her impressive performance in this series bestowed her the Best New Female TV Personality accolade from the 21st PMPC Star Awards for TV. They then both became part of the teen-oriented comedy program Gokada Go! and topbilled anew two narratives of Your Song Presents (“Someday” and “Ngiti”) and Love Spell Presents: Cindy-rella.
In 2008, Kim was among the main cast of “Maligno,” the primetime horror-thriller that was the second installment of Sineserye Presents: The Susan Roces Cinema Collection and the TV adaptation of veteran actress’ 1977 movie with the same title, where she was able to work alongside the Optimum Star Claudine Barretto.
From spreading terror, she eventually became a purveyor of laughter and good vibes every weeknight as the street-smart and bubbly tour guide Jasmine Estocapio in the Filipino incarnation of the hit 2005 Korean drama bearing the same title. She also headlined the Maalaala Mo Kaya “Notebook” episode and Your Song Presents: My Only Hope with then perennial on-screen partner Gerald.
The Chinita Princess scored her fourth primetime teleserye in 2009 via Tayong Dalawa, playing the role of Audrey King, a young woman torn between the love of twin brothers both named David Garcia Jr., portrayed by Gerald and Jake Cuenca.
2010 had been another busy year for her as she once again starred in another primetime series titled Kung Tayo’y Magkakalayo as she played the role of the rebellious yet loving Gwen Marie Crisanto. Joining her was Gerald (who was her love interest), Coco Martin (who stood as her brother), and veteran thespians Kris Aquino, Gabby Concepcion, and Albert Martinez (who were her parents).
It was then succeeded by her stints in the MMK “Bimpo” episode and two Your Song Presents narratives, namely, “Maling Akala” and “Kim”. She also got her first-ever superheroine role through Wansapanataym Presents: Super Kikay and her Flying Pagong as she took on the titular character.
Kim had a special participation in the 2011 teleserye Minsan Lang Kita Iibigin after she was tapped to depict the young Alondra Sebastiano-Del Tierro, played by award-winning actress Lorna Tolentino. That was where her team-up with Xian Lim was born and continued as they top-billed My Binondo Girl, in which she breathed life to the titular character named Jade Dimaguiba. She also appeared in MMK: Kape episode and guested in the sitcom Toda Max.
In 2012, she was once again seen in an MMK episode titled “Kalendaryo” and headlined the family drama series Ina, Kapatid, Anak alongside her contemporary Maja Salvador. They both enthralled us with their depiction of sisters-turned-stiff nemeses Celyn and Margaux. She then had another gig in Wansapanataym Presents through the “My Fairy Kasambahay” story.
The 29-year-old actress then fascinated us with her portrayal of two characters in the 2014 primetime period drama Ikaw Lamang, playing Isabelle Miravelez on its first book and Jacqueline Sangalang (or also known as Andrea Hidalgo) on the second book.
Kim then got reunited with on-and-off-screen partner Xian Lim in the 2016 primetime romance drama The Story Of Us, as they portrayed childhood friends-turned-lovers Cristine “Tin” Manalo and Ferdinand “Macoy” Sandoval Jr. She also starred in the MMK “Korona” episode depicting beauty queen Jeany Rose Joromat.
2017 was indeed a great year for loyal fans of KimErald, or what her team-up with Gerald Anderson is fondly called, after they were given the opportunity to work opposite each other again in the daytime triathlon drama Ikaw Lang Ang Iibigin as they played Bianca Agbayani and Gabriel Viloria, childhood friends who both became athletes then lovers as they turn into adults.
She starred in two MMK stories in 2018, namely, “Mata” and “Tangke”, and was succeeded by another appearance in the long-running drama anthology a year after, narrating the life of renowned young volleybelle Cherry Ann “Sisi” Rondina in the “MVP” episode.
For sure, many of you have missed seeing Kim Chiu in a teleserye just like we do, right? Finally, the waiting game’s finally over as we’re about to see her again in a regular gig via Love Thy Woman, beginning February 10 on Kapamilya Gold!
