JM de Guzman’s gripping television appearances through the years

In his almost one decade in the local entertainment scene, JM de Guzman has indeed proven his caliber not just as a topnotch actor, but as a great singer as well. Through the years, he has remained as one of the most sought-after thespians of his generation, amidst of the personal setbacks and problems he had gone through.

We might have seen him as an adult already when his star began to shine many years ago, but it was revealed in his exclusive interview with Star Magic in October 2018 that his career originally took off by doing commercials when he was only six years old. At 13, he was among the cast of the youth-oriented show Ang TV 2, in which he was able to work with Empress Schuck, Shaina Magdayao, Arjo Atayde, and Denise Laurel. He also auditioned to be a part of the Star Circle Batch 9, which included Janus Del Prado, Heart Evangelista, Coco Martin, Alwyn Uytingco, and Rafael Rosell, but he wasn’t launched because the management deemed of him as he too young and not mature enough during that time.

After nine years, he successfully broke into showbiz by playing small roles in four books of Precious Hearts Romances Presents in 2010 – “The Substitute Bride,” “Midnight Phantom,” “Kristine,” and “Alynna.”

Undeniably, 2011 had been a great year and a year of firsts for JM because of the strings of opportunities bestowed to him.

He had his first Maalaala Mo Kaya stint through the “Pasaporte” episode, wherein he reenacted the harrowing story of “Jay” who almost became a drug courier of the West African Drug Syndicate in his hopes of working overseas. It was then succeeded by his portrayal of Pilipinas Got Talent Season 2 grand winner Marcelito Pomoy when his inspiring journey was featured in the longest-running drama anthology.

On that same year, he had his starring role debut via the remake of the classic 90’s soap opera Mula Sa Puso. He played Gabriel Amarillo, which was originally portrayed by the late actor Rico Yan, and headlined the teleserye alongside Lauren Young and Enrique Gil.

Before 2011 ended, the Kapamilya heartthrob amazed us in his more mature role, not to mention first titular, in the controverial and well-loved afternoon drama Angelito: Batang Ama. Due to the positive reception of the viewers, a sequel was released a year after titled Angelito: Ang Bagong Yugto. He also touched our hearts as the lovelorn Muslim man Acmad who fell hardly in love to a Christian woman named Flor (Marlann Flores) in the “Kurtina” episode of MMK.

After his one-year hiatus, he marked his much-awaited return in 2014 by appearing on his first-ever Ipaglaban Mo episode tagged “Ibigay Ang Aming Karapatan” and on the primetime series Hawak Kamay as the half-brother of Piolo Pascual’s character. He also made us kilig whit his stint in the “Sim Card” episode of MMK as the chick and gay magnet Alex.

In 2015, he once again scored a gig in Ipaglaban Mo through its Valentine episode “Totoong Mahal Kita” opposite Meg Imperial and in MMK via the “Bota” episode. He also starred in the afternoon series All Of Me as Edong, the teenage version of Albert Martinez’s character Dr. Manuel Figueras and became the love interest of the latter’s wife Lena (Yen Santos).

Due to his personal struggles, JM had been out of the limelight for some years. Thus, his comeback in 2018 was indeed highly anticipated by avid Kapamilya viewers, especially by his fans, which was marked by his remarkable portrayal of the dashing and mysterious Adrian Oldivar in Araw Gabi, which also served as the official return of the Precious Hearts Romances Presents series on television after five years.

This year, the 30-year-old actor continues to astound us with his exceptional acting chops through his performances in MMK as Pinoy professional mixed martial arts fighter Ramon “The Bicolano” Gonzales in its “black belt” episode and in Ipaglaban Mo as an identity thief in its “Impostor” episode alongside Rafael Rosell.

We last saw him on primetime as a responsible and loving brother and the firstborn of the Mabunga Family – Chico – in Pamilya Ko
