Young artist Sam Cruz is proof that anything is possible when you have the motivation and discipline. Her life is a big juggling act – showbiz, studies, and passion projects – but Sam manages to excel in everything and she talked about how she does it in this episode of Kapamilya Chat.
Sam currently takes her online classes, performs regularly on ASAP Natin ‘To as one fifth of its ‘New Breed of Singers’, and is part of The Squad Plus. Her busy life might sound overwhelming to teens like her but Sam is not one to give up when things get hard. She learned by mom Sunshine Cruz’s example. While there’s no one-size-fits-all formula, she said to-do lists and calendars work best for her.
Soundtrips also help soothe the stress. Sam loves listening to the songs of Moira Dela Torre, even plays them as lullabies. So when she met Moira on ASAP Natin ‘To, her inner fangirl was so alive.
More importantly, enjoy what you’re doing. Joining The Squad Plus is like mixing work and play for Sam. She enjoys doing the challenges and vlogs and meeting new people like their recent squadmates, ex-Pinoy Big Brother housemates Andi Abaya and Kobi Brown.
On her music, Sam is thrilled to share her debut single “Train of Thought,” the perfect anthem for those who easily get startled when they see their crush. “I don’t know what to do. You’re standing right there looking fine as hell,” says her favorite lines in the song. The track comes with a cute music video which she starred in with Leon Barretto, whom she personally picked as her leading man.
Sam wishes to collaborate with Moira to explore other genres as well. She also would like to sing with Gigi de Lana one day. Besides music, Sam also wants to explore and follow her parents’ footsteps in acting. She already had her acting debut in iWantTFC’s “Unloving U” starring Loisa Andalio and Ronnie Alonte.
Looking forward to more acting projects, Sam mentioned she’s a big fan of LizQuen and KathNiel, and she would like to work with them in a rom-com show. Besides these love teams, she would love to act with her mom, Sunshine, maybe as a ‘kontrabida’ tandem. A scary film also sounds good since she’s into watching horror movies.
Coming from a clan of thespians and performers, Sam owns up to pressure and comparisons. After all, the Cruz clan is such a big banner to carry. But she takes them as motivation to work hard and excel. “’Pag sinasabi nila na mas magaling pa ang magulang, totoo talaga. Kaya I really have to work hard to get there, to be something like my mom, how amazing she is. She inspires me,” she said.
At 17, Sam is already equipped with admirable maturity and grit toward working on her dreams. She always talks about hard work and improving herself. So as advice to aspiring artists, Sam underscored the power of discipline. She said the first step is to put your mind into your dream. Also, keep on practicing and try writing your own songs. Teens like her are lucky to have enough platforms to showcase their talents. Sam believes there’s no harm in posting your song covers online and it may even lead to your big break.
