Weeks after the monumental Star Magic Black Pen event, wherein we witnessed the more than 40 stars inked their respective deals with ABS-CBN’s talent arm, DJ Jhai Ho continues to get to know more the new and promising talents through his conversations with them on the online show Hotspot.
And in its latest episode, five up-and-coming female artists graced the show – Sela Guia, SAB, Zabel Lamberth, Arabella Davao, and Kaila Estrada – to share about a bit of their personal lives and talk about their early experiences in the local entertainment scene.
First to get interviewed was Sela, who used to be a member of the Filipina all-girl sing-and-dance group MNL48. According to her, being an artist has been innate as she recalled how she used to be the “walking doll” of their family when was still a kid, who instantly sings, dances, and acts whenever she’s told to.
An aspiring artista ever since her younger years, being part of MNL48 has truly helped her not just to hone her talents, but in inculcating to her the value of professionalism, camaraderie, discipline, and punctuality. Thus, it’s definitely a dream come true for her to become part of Star Magic.
“To be honest po, since no’ng contract signing – Black Pen event – hanggang ngayon, nao-overwhelm pa rin po ako sa mga comments ng tao kasi una, noong nasa MNL pa ako, grateful po ako sa lahat ng natutunan ko there, kaso parang no’ng nandoon ako, I don’t know how to get out of my box, like get out of my shell. So ngayon, super grateful ako kasi bagong mundo na ito, bagong matututunan. At sa mga nangyayari po sa akin ngayon, super grateful po ako talaga. So, thank you so much po sa Star Magic,” Sela related.
She may have sung and danced throughout her time in MNL48, but she disclosed that acting is actually her main talent. And her impression of Bea Alonzo’s Bobby Salazar from the hit movie Four Sisters And A Wedding during her Hotspot stint was truly impressive!
Just like her dream leading man Joshua Garcia, she describes herself as ‘genuine’, who displays the same personality on-and-off-cam.
Young songstress SAB came next, who’s probably already familiar to KUMU users as she usually does livestream there. Unlike Sela, being in the industry was never a dream for her and only thought of it as cool. But then, she auditioned for Star Music and became one of its new breeds of talents, who pierces our souls with her hugot songs inspired by her own experiences or of her family, friends, and other people, as well as different songs, series, or movies.
The 19-year-old musician also performed a portion of her track “Cancelledt”, which is the OST of the digital anthology series “Click, Like, Share.” She also expressed her eagerness to collaborate with fast-rising artists Angela Ken, Jayda, Trisha Denise, BGYO, and BINI.
Being a singer-songwriter, she describes herself as a storyteller, saying, “Because everything that I do, I’m very purposive. I like to make sure that there’s meaning and in general, make an impact to the people.”
Succeeding her was Zabel Lamberth, who has been trying to enter showbiz ever since she was 16 years old. She recounted to DJ Jhai Ho how she and her ever-supportive mom sent tons of emails to various talent agencies and went through different auditions just for her to finally land a spot in a project.
And her efforts weren’t put into waste as she eventually became part of a few commercials and got discovered by a talent manager, who encouraged her to undergo workshops and not easily give up on her ambitions. Now, she’s among the up-and-coming artists of Star Magic.
“Actually, very proud po ang mom ko sa akin. Kung nag-give up po ako, e ‘di sana wala po ako ngayon dito. Pero my mom, isa rin po siya sa reason why nagpu-push through po ako rito kasi kinausap niya ako na ‘sa lahat ng naging efforts natin before, ngayon sasayangin mo pa ba ang opportunity? Nandito ka na, just make the most out of it and have fun’,” she imparted.
When asked for her advice for those people who also dreams of becoming an artista like her, Zabel emphasized that they should not give up and always exert effort and give their best in everything that they do. Besides, they should be genuine and not to step on other people for their own gains, and importantly, be happy with what they do in order to attract blessings and opportunities.
With acting as her strength, she channeled the Basha in her as she re-enacted the remarkable “ako na lang uli” scene of Bea Alonzo in the iconic film “One More Chance.” She also aspires to work opposite Joshua Garcia, as well as Jameson Blake and Jack Reid.
As she went through a lot of setbacks before arriving to where she is at present, she described herself as “palaban”, who is willing to do everything she could in any task that will be given to her.
Being the daughter veteran actors Jackielou Blanco and Ricky Davao, Arabella Davao admitted that it’s inevitable for her to feel pressured since people are expecting her to be also great in acting like her parents.
“Siyempre hindi mawawala ‘yong pressure kasi I think ine-expect nila agad na magaling din akong umarte or something like that. Pero for me, I try na lang to see it as I’m lucky na may mentors na ako dito lang sa bahay na pwede ko lang tanungin anytime. And I think naman in any work may pressure e. You just have to know kung paano siya i-handle,” she told DJ Jhai Ho.
Although her mom and dad had sometimes brought her to the set of a project they’re doing, her interest in acting was not enkindled until she was in high school. She started to attend workshops in 2019 when she’s already finished her studies.
While having celebrity parents is an advantage for her, she revealed that it’s not easy for her to score a role in a project as she still needs to go through auditions just like everyone else. When asked what type of role she wants to portray, Arabella expressed her enthusiasm to try every character possible. Same with Sela and Zabel, she also wishes to work with Joshua Garcia, as well as with her favorite loveteam KathNiel.
As she possesses gorgeous visuals like her parents, she divulged that she appreciates it more when people praise her personality and being “real,” which she considers as the greatest compliment she has ever received.
From one showbiz royalty to another, Kaila Estrada is not new anymore to show business being one of the kids of John Estrada and Janice De Belen. Besides, she’s also been into modelling for a couple of years now. However, a conversation she had with a friend in 2019 made her realize that she also wants to try acting, so she grabbed the opportunity that Star Magic is casting new talents.
Despite having famous parents, she and her siblings still had a normal childhood, except for the instances when people randomly approach them to take photos with them. And now that she’s part of the upcoming series Viral, DJ Jhai Ho asked what pieces of advice she got from her parents, as well as her experiences on filming her first-ever series.
“Noong una po kasi medyo nahihiya ako humingi ng advice sa kanila kasi, I guess, naninibago ako. Pero super supportive naman sila. Sobrang ganda ng experience kasi sobrang warm ng welcome sa’kin no’ng cast and ‘yong production din. So kahit na nininerbiyos ako kasi nga bago po ako, parang ‘di ko alam ‘yong mae-expect ko, naging comfortable ako agad. Super happy set kami,” she said.
Then she added, “Sila Mama naman, the only advice na binigay nila sa akin, of course, be professional, maging magalang sa kapwa-artista, makisama ka. You know, the typical things naman na sinasabi sa atin ng magulang natin.” Besides, her Mama, who she regards as her role model, also reminded her to drink plenty of water when emotions get high in her acting performances, as well as be honest with herself at all times.
Just like Arabella, she also wants to try any kind of role, but it would be extra great if it’s in an action drama and with her dream leading men Jericho Rosales, Joshua Garcia, and Jameson Blake. When asked to describe herself, she uttered ‘driven’, since she’s focused to be really good on what she’s doing and in doing her best. She hopes to be recognized someday as a great actress like Janice.
The episode wrapped with the girls taking on the fun “Never Have I Ever Challenge”, wherein they revealed whether they’ve already done or not each situations or activities mentioned by the host.
