With her soothing voice and poetic talent that can affect hearts, Angela Ken is the artist we all need to listen to when we need to fall in love with life all over again. Get to know the young OPM star behind the viral song “Ako Naman Muna” in this episode of Kapamilya Chat.
“Isang araw po, may in-upload akong isang kanta sa TikTok and the rest is history,” said Angela, who started singing at family reunions and school events. Stuck at home last year due to the pandemic, she had spare time to share her music on social media. “Wala po akong intensyon na magpasikat. Gusto ko lang po talagang i-share ‘yung ginawa ko,” she thought after a TikTok upload trended online.
Angela didn’t see it coming but the numbers grew and soon translated into showbiz offers. At 19, Angela is bestowed with the poetic abilities that can stir emotions. She writes from personal experiences or if too meager, she’d take inspiration from other people’s stories. Wherever she gets all the soul-piercing ‘hugots,’ it all boils down to reality.
“Para siyang diary na hindi lang ako ‘yung matatamaan. Hindi lang ako ‘yung makakapag-reflect kundi pati ‘yung kapwa ko.,” said Angela, who was taught by her musically inclined family that the purpose of music is to touch the listeners.
Angela’s “Ako Na Muna” is an easy LSS, with an enchanting tempo that lulls the heart and words that motivate. The young artist didn’t intend to finish the song, thus uploading an incomplete version on TikTok, without a title. “Para siyang mabigat na bagahe for me. Sobrang lalim po niya. It was so dark,” she described the first verse. Things changed when the snippet went viral. Angela was suddenly on fire to finish what would be a powerful life anthem.
After reading stories of netizens who resonated with the song, Angela decided to make the succeeding verses more uplifting than dark. She finished the chorus part – while taking a shower. She uploaded the next fragment on the same night, and the response was even wilder. Listeners, especially young breadwinners, were brought to a place of solace and encouragement, telling themselves via comment section, “Ako Naman Muna” – and that’s where Angela got the title.
“Ako Naman Muna” is birthed by real stories of people. Angela recently dropped its English version, translated by fellow Star Music artist Sab, to cater to a wider audience. Prior to their collab, Angela listened to Sab’s kind of music and she knew by then that “Ako Naman Muna’s” English adaptation is going to be perfectly and beautifully written.
The whole song hits different when you are tired of the noise yet hurting in silence. Angela points out its message about not being too quick to judge and knowing one’s worth, saying we can’t keep on looking at others’ mistakes without reflecting on our own. More importantly, we are loved – even if it’s just a single person rooting for us.
“I want them to realize that God was saying those lines to them. Minsan masyado po tayong naka-focus sa dark. Kailangan lang nating lumingon or maghanap ng liwanag. All we need is redirection. Lahat naman tayo napapagod pero kailangan natin bumangon,” expressed the 19-year-old artist.
Proving the impact of her music, even seasoned musicians can’t get enough of her songs. Yeng Constantino mentioned in a separate Kapamilya Chat interview that she dreams to collaborate with the young artist. The feeling is mutual as Angela looks up to the Pop Rock Royalty as well. Besides that of Yeng, she also loves listening to the music of Sarah Geronimo, Moira Dela Torre, Ben&Ben, and One Direction when she was younger.
Angela, also an aspiring engineer, extends her list of achievements by joining ASAP Natin To’s new breed of singers alongside Sam Cruz, Anji Salvacion, Diego Guttierez, and KD Estrada. To be part of a show headlined by her idols, she mentioned Regine Velasquez, is every fangirl’s dream come true. “Totoo po na pag nandun na kayo, mapapasabi ka ng ‘Parang dati lang nanonood lang ako at ngayon ako na ‘yung pinapanood,’” she related.
It doesn’t end there as Angela becomes the newest recruit of The Squad Plus, the teen group led by the OG Gold Squad Andrea Brillantes, Seth Fedelin, Francine Diaz, and Kyle Echarri. Together, the squad takes on challenges and creates fun content for their followers. Angela’s favorite so far is her prank video with her mom. More than the newfound fame, she enjoys the company of her new ‘barkada.’

Cookie Monster Collection
Taking a break from all the soulful ‘hugots,’ the new gen OPM artist bares her inner child by sharing her Cookie Monster collectibles.
Angela started her collection at 13 during her freshman year in high school, influenced by a friend who loves Elmo from Sesame Street. Without knowing, her love for Cookie Monster turned into a full-blown collection. Since Cookie Monster items are rare, Angela doesn’t think twice about her purchase. Her parents are also supportive of her little quirks.
She has Cookie Monster stuffed toys, pillows, and clothes from dresses and sleepwear, to crop tops and socks. Those who follow her on TikTok often see her wearing Cookie Monster sleepwear. She also showed the yellow Cookie Monster ‘pambahay’ she was wearing while uploading the longer version of “Ako Naman Muna.”
