Spotlight on Himig Handog Interpreters, Part 5

Through the years, Himig Handog P-Pop Love Songs have become an avenue for various musicians both the new and old from different genres to lend their voices to creations of local composers. But this year saw the youngest performers in the person of Bailey May and Ylona Garcia collectively known as BaiLona.

The teen tandem have been tapped to sing engaged couple Jack Rufo and Honlani Rabe’s upbeat tune titled O, Pag-Ibig. Even though many presume that the song to be was about young love, the soon-to-wed composers shared that it actually hopes to encapsulate the “happiest part” of being in love. O, Pag-Ibig’s music video was created by Mint College.

Bailey and Ylona rose to fame after being among the teen housemates of the recently concluded Pinoy Big Brother 737 season. Bailey, who recently released his self-titled album, traces his musical roots to being a YouTube singing star that got him being noticed by Daniel Padilla and even singer-songwriter Sean Kingston. Ylona, who is set to release her first local album soon, meanwhile is no stranger to performing as she has been a front act for renowned OPM stars like Martin Nievera, Sarah Geronimo and Bamboo during their concerts in Australia.

Like Nyoy, Klarisse De Guzman is also a first-timer interpreter on the songwriting competition. Although, Klarisse is no stranger to competing, as she herself has been a contestant herself on the first season of The Voice of the Philippines, where she emerged as the first runner-up.

Klarisse lent her voice to Jose Joel Mendoza’s Sana’y Tumibok Muli, which tells the story a former couple wanting to rekindle their romance even though one of them knew that the feelings are not there any longer. Sana’y Tumibok Muli’s music video was shot by Asia Pacific College.

The singer of afternoon teleserye Doble Kara’s theme song together with Morissette is one of the many aspiring singers who have tried their luck in every singing competition that she can enter. In fact, at one point, she even competed with her The Voice coach Sarah Geronimo during their teen years.

This year’s Himig Handog saw four duets. One out of the four duets is composed of Angeline Quinto and Michael Pangilinan. This duet is a first for the two of them ever since they became Himig Handog interpreters. Angeline first become a Himig Handog interpreter in 2013 while Michael first became an interpreter in 2014 with Pare Mahal Mo Raw Ako.

This year, Angeline and Michael’s voices brought to life the story of Marlon Banuevo’s Parang Tayo Pero Hindi, which, as the title suggests, is about two people acting as a couple yet failing to make things official. Parang Tayo Pero Hindi’s music video was made by De La Salle College of Saint Benilde.

The Queen of Teleserye Theme Songs counts a number of her co-champions these days as her past singing opponents. Like Klarisse, Angeline had also once competed with Pop Star Princess Sarah Geronimo on the singing competition called Star for A Night. She has also faced off with Mark Bautista and Mau Marcelo on the competition Philippine Idol. It was however only on Mega Star Sharon Cuneta’s show Star Power: Sharon’s Search for the Next Female Pop Superstar in 2011 when she was finally able to bag the grand prize.

The Harana Prince’s story was one that started many years ago and was filled with so much hard work. He started as a small singer, who, if not for the late Master Showman German Moreno’s discovery, would not have been the star that he is today. He was the runner up on the second season of Your Face Sounds Familiar bur prior to that he was a member of the local boy band called Harana Boys.

After grand prize win last 2014 of Mahal Ko o Mahal Ako, the song she interpreted, KZ, has once again joined this year’s Himig Handog to take another shot at the top plum together with her composer. But to add a little twist, she was paired for a duet with Jay-R.

Soul Supreme and RnB Prince were tasked to interpret David Dimaguila’s empowering song Laban Pa, which follows the story of always putting the big fight for love. Laban Pa’s music video was created by Mapua Institute of Technology.

The jazz singer, who formerly suffered from a throat problem, led to the change of her singing voice and eventually, into creating a singing voice that become uniquely identified to her. After obtaining her degree from Davao, KZ joined The X Factor Philippines where she became an early favorite after performing the laidback version of Over The Rainbow. Eventually she emerged as the show’s winner under Charice’s team.

KZ’s Mahal Ko o Mahal Ako was actually her second interpretation to make it to top five. The first one that made it that far was Scared to Death which landed on fourth place in 2013.

Jay-R, for his part, has been mostly identified to ballads and RnB songs. But his most iconic hit was Bakit Pa Ba in 2003.
