In the past years, the public came to see him as the astig and quiet Daniel Padilla. This weekend, we uncover a different and unknown side of the most sought Teen King of this generation--one that only him and the few who are very close to him really knows. #TatakStarMagic
Whether it was a premonition of the bigness that he would be or something else, Daniel’s first ever project on TV was when he became part of Gimik in 2010. It was the remake of the 90s iconic youth series of the same name where he was paired with Julia Montes as Daniel Ledesma.
After which, he became Patrick Rivero on the youth-oriented show Growing Up where he first worked with his now Teen Queen Kathryn Bernardo.
Daniel’s star, however, shown the brightest when he got his first-ever titular role on primetime for Princess and I. The show not only launched him as the star to watch out for in 2012 but it also marked the birth of his phenomenal love team with Kathryn and the fandom that is now known as KathNiels. The romantic-comedy themed soap gave Daniel the role of Gino Dela Rosa and eventually Dasho Yuan Rinpoche. It had the entire cast shooting parts of it in Bhutan.
By the time he took on the role of Joaquin and Ryan Manansala on his 2nd primetime soap with Kathryn titled Got To Believe in 2013, the two were already household names. The series finale, which was dubbed “Best Ending Ever,” not only dominated Twitter but also the ratings game with 38.6%.
When Daniel and Kathryn returned to primetime in 2015 for the remake of the 90s soap Pangako Sa’Yo as Angelo Bunevasta and Yna Macaspac, respectively it came as no surprise that the show’s finale episode raked in a 44.5% rating. The soap even marked a record high rating of 50.1% during its nine-month run.
His first dibs on the big screen happened in 2012 when he was tapped to join Star Magic’s 20th anniversary ensemble cast movie, 24/7 In Love, where he was once again paired with his perennial love team Kathryn as Billy Fernandez.
The year 2012 was a year of firsts for Daniel as, just a few months after he got his first film, he was tapped to star on his first Metro Manila Film Festival entry titled Sisterakas. Daniel played the role of Gio Samson on the film, which he starred together with box office giants Vice Ganda, Kris Aquino, Ai Ai Delas Alas and Kathryn.
But the former film did not really give Daniel the break that he needed. What made had finally carve a name in the movie scene was his first titular rom-com with Kathryn. The coming of age film titled Must Be Love had had him playing the role of Ivan Lacson.
That same year Daniel also had his first horror film through his 2nd MMFF entry Pagpag: Siyam na Buhay. On its first day alone, the film earned a staggering P23.7 million.
By 2014, it has been established that Daniel, along with Kathryn, are both box office gems. In that year alone, Daniel made three films. There’s the action film Sa Ngalan ng Ama Ina at mga Anak with the Padilla clan, his first historical, action drama, his third MMFF entry Bonifacio: Ang Unang Pangulo and the box office success that is She’s Dating the Gangster together with Kathryn. The Cathy Garcia-Molina film had Daniel acting as the hippie Kenji and Kenneth Delos Reyes from the Wattpad inspired film that ended as a box office giant with a gross of P296 million.
As if their Box Office star title wasn’t enough, Daniel’s film with Kathryn last year titled Crazy Beautiful You once again trumped their previous record. The did not only film breach the P300million mark but it also made history as the 2nd film to earn $2million in international screenings. The film had Daniel’s character Kiko Alcantara shooting in a remote village in Pampanga and Tarlac where they even became really close with the Aeta community residing in the area.
Over the years, Daniel proved his mettle not only as an actor but even as a singer. His engagement into the music scene came as no surprise especially since he also had his own band Parking 5 in the past where he stood as the bassist.
In 2012, Daniel released a self-titled EP where he sang mostly covers of famous hits. The most notable song on the album was his own rendition of Rivermaya’s original hit Hinahanap Hanap Kita, which he debuted on an episode of Gandang Gabi Vice. The Philippine Association of the Record Industry awarded it with a gold certificate after selling 8,000 copies a week since hitting the record stores. The album reached a double platinum status.
The following year, Daniel launched his sophomore album DJP, which also carried his Himig Handog P-Pop Love Song multi-awarded song Nasa Iyo Na lahat. The album reached a shocking platinum status in less than 24 hours since its release as it sold 20,000 copies. After two days, the album reached a double platinum status, which meant that it sold 40,000 copies.
In 2014, Daniel’s third studio album titled I Heart You once again continued his platinum album streak. Fans celebrated his success by letting it trend on social media. Daniel continued to add his own flavor on local iconic songs like Langit Na Naman, Ewan and With A Smile.
Last year, Daniel released two albums including his fourth album I Feel Good and his first Christmas Album with the Teen Queen titled Christmas Love Duets.
I Feel Good, as with his previous albums, had Daniel’s modulated and semi-husky voice singing mostly love songs like Knocks Me Off My Feet, Moon River and Isn’t She Lovely. But what sets his album apart was his rendition of their top-rating soap’s theme song Pangako Sa’Yo. The album also included his second Himig Handog P-Pop Love Songs interpretation titled Simpleng Tulad Mo. Once again, the album’s sales reached a milestone as it was awarded a gold record status in less than a week.
