What made Dingdong, Marian choose ‘Rewind’ as their comeback movie

"Rewind”, the Star Cinema film which will star power couple Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera-Dantes, was finally announced on Wednesday, June 21.

While the DongYan-Star Cinema collaboration — also in partnership with APT Entertainment and AgostoDos Media — may have come as a surprise to everyone, the creative team behind the project had been working on it behind the scenes since 2019. As stated by Dingdong during the “New Movie Alert: DongYan” event, the project has been “years in the making” even before it was finally presented to the public.

According to APT Entertainment president and CEO Mike Tuviera, Dingdong and Marian were actually presented with multiple story pitches, from horror to comedy. But upon seeing the script of “Rewind”, they chose it in a heartbeat.

“I think 10 pitches all in all were presented to the couple, tapos iba talaga 'to. When this was presented to them, immediately alam ko, wala nang competition. Talagang pumili na sila right then and there,” Mike recalled.

The upcoming film, which will be helmed by director Mae Cruz-Alviar, is described as a family drama with “a touch of magic realism.” While other details are still kept under wraps, the film’s writer, Enrico Santos, hinted that the story has “two timelines” and “two realities.”

“The script in itself is already an experience,” said creative manager Daisy Cayanan-Mejares. “So, what more kung ‘yung movie pa?”

Agreeing with Daisy, creative director Carmi Raymundo also believes the script is a huge factor why Dingdong and Marian agreed to do the project.

“I think that's one of the strongest points, ‘yung strength talaga ng material ni sir Enrico. Totoo ‘yung sinabi ni Daisy, script pa lang, experience siya,” she attested. “Walang echos, parang kahit ilang beses mo siyang basahin, nakakaiyak siya. Nakakatawa, nakakaiyak.”

The film’s script and genre indeed were deciding factors for the couple on why they said “yes” to the movie with Star Cinema.

“We're very, very true to form kasi it is a family movie, it has a very big heart, it has a touch of magic realism. So, so many elements na masasabing pang pamilya talaga siya,” he added.

Dingdong also recalled how at some point they thought the movie will no longer push through because of the pandemic. So when they received the news that “Rewind” will still happen and with them as the lead stars, he and Marian immediately agreed.

“Akala talaga namin for a while hindi na kasi matagal na siyang hindi natuloy. Siguro magpapatuloy siya pero with different actors already dahil sa sobrang ganda ng kwento, hindi pwedeng hindi siya ikuwento. Kaya natuwa ako noong sinabing pwede pa. So, let's do it,” he shared.

Sharing the same sentiments, Direk Mae also thought the film would no longer happen. But fast forward to this day, she believes that everything fell into place.

“I didn't know if it was gonna push through pa kasi s’yempre ‘di ba, we were afraid to work and all,” the director recalled, referring to the pandemic. “And then ito, matutuloy na siya. I think it's meant to be, meant for us.”

“I think ‘yun ‘yung part of the excitement kasi alam mo na ang tagal na since then, and yet here we are. It's time for it. In God's perfect time,” she added.

“Rewind” will premiere in cinemas to touch your hearts this 2023!
