In 2007, what became the most important and extravagant annual celebrity event was launched. The Star Magic Ball had since captivated and astonished us through the years with Philippine entertainment’s biggest stars all glammed up and styled elegantly.
Yearly, the whole nation lays witness to jaw-dropping fashion, dazzling looks, and a glittering assemblage of stars seen nowhere else. And throughout those past ten years, each staging of the Star Magic Ball has its own memorable moments that surprised and enthralled us all.
Let’s revisit and remember all those unforgettable highlights that made the Star Magic Ball the most talked about and significant showbiz event we won’t dare miss, going to its 11th edition this year.
Firsts always occupy a special spot in our hearts, right?
The annual spectacular gathering kicked-off on August 5, 2007 with less than 200 guests only. What made this more special was it coincided with Star Magic’s 15th year as the country’s premiere talent management and development center. And it seemed that one of its hosts, comedienne Pokwang, indeed prepared for it as shown in her scene-stealer get-up and explosive Egyptian-inspired dance number in which she even wore a candelabra as headdress.
Power couple Korina Sanchez and Mar Roxas bagged the Stardust Awards-Senior Category while the junior category was won by Zanjoe Marudo and Anne Curtis.
Estranged couple Claudine Barretto and Raymart Santiago’s appearance in the masquerade-themed party had the press and onlookers astonished. From the moment they alight from their luxury car up to how they partied all the way with their colleagues, the two absolutely made a good impression.
It was the Optimum Star’s last Star Magic Ball as a Kapamilya, while it was Angel Locsin’s first after her shocking jump to the network.
Another thing that made a mark to the spectators was Pokwang’s elaborate theatrical ensemble, which she jokingly disclosed was done for only 10 minutes while the long trail of her gown was just a curtain.
This year was Teleserye King Coco Martin’s first-ever ball experience as he triumphantly crossed over from indie to mainstream through his premiere teleserye Tayong Dalawa alongside Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition 1 alumni Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson. Apart from him, it was Daniel’s first attendance too!
Former teleserye queen Kristine Hermosa was also besieged with questions regarding the real score between her and Oyo Boy Sotto, as she tagged him to be her date that night.
Comedian Chokoleit exuded the natural komikero in him as he trailed the red carpet with a standee of his close friend Pokwang due to her absence.
To honor the ‘father’ of many of the industry’s well-loved and sought-after artists, Concert King Martin Nievera performed the song he composed for Johnny Manahan, a.k.a. Mr. M, titled “All For One, One For All” before the celebration concluded.
Spotted for the very first time in the ball were happy couple Multimedia Star Toni Gonzaga and Director Paul Soriano and fresh from their PBB stint then-loveteam Melai Cantiveros and Jason Francisco.
It’s Showtime host Anne Curtis also stole the spotlight with her elegance and chic style.
Two talents from a rival network turned everyone’s heads as they graced the red carpet of the gathering’s fifth staging. Despite leaving the Kapamilya network in 2008, the executives still invited their former talent Heart Evangelista and she was able to reunite with her friends Kaye Abad, Nikki Valdez, and Desiree del Valle. In addition, Lovi Poe was invited by her co-star in the movie My Neighbor’s Wife Jake Cuenca to be his date.
For the third time, Pokwang got the onlookers stoked with her humungous coif and five edgy outfits designed by Kermit Tesoro and Popo Go.
What made the sixth edition of the ball extra special was that it also marked the 20th anniversary celebration of Star Magic. Two loveteams debuted in the red carpet that year, namely KathNiel (Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla following their Princess and I gig) and KimXi (Kim Chiu and Xian Lim), with KathNiel taking home the Breakout Style Award.
Bizarre as it might seem, the event also welcomed Titoy, a puppet owned by ventriloquist Ruther Urquia who joined the Pilipinas Got Talent in 2010.
The seventh Star Magic Ball deviated from its previous and succeeding editions with a new format. Instead of the usual sit-down, dinner set-up, the attendees walked the runway garbed with stunning creations of iconic Dubai-based Filipino designer Michael Cinco, as a tribute to his formidable contribution to the country and fashion industry. Star Magic also awarded him a plaque after the show.
In the previous years, fans could not even take a glimpse of the proceedings. In the 2014 edition, ABS-CBN livestreamed the event for the first time on SkyCable pay-per-view and the iWanTV app.
It will be remembered as the year Jolina Magdangal returned to the Star Magic Ball, alongside husband Mark Escueta of Rivermaya. From being dateless in the past years, Coco finally found a partner in his Walang Hanggan and Ikaw Lamang love interest Julia Montes.
Pantsuit became a noticeable trend in that year’s celebration as four girls opted to don that fashionable piece instead of the common long frocks, namely Alex Gonzaga, Tippy Dos Santos, and Metro Magazine editor-in-chief Sara Meier.
Jodi Sta. Maria had been pacing through the red carpet for the previous years, until she got her good-looking unico hijo Thirdy to accompany her.
Everyone also gushed over Liza Soberano and Enrique Gil as they absolutely looked fabulous walking the red carpet together for the first time.
Last year’s Star Magic Ball was indeed one for the books with the most number of loveteams and real-life couples attending. These included Gerald Anderson and Bea Alonzo, Jessy Mendiola and Luis Manzano, Daniel Matsunaga and Erich Gonzales, Diego Loyzaga and Sofia Andres, McCoy de Leon and Elisse Joson, Kristel Fulgar and CJ Navato, Bailey May and Ylona Garcia, Joshua Garcia and Julia Barretto, Sharlene San Pedro and Jairus Aquino, Kathryn and Daniel, Ronnie Alonte and Sue Ramirez, and a lot more!
And who could forget Liza Soberano’s most talked about ball gown created by Michael Cinco?
2017 was a year of surprises. Claudine Barretto graced the ball once again with her presence after missing the glam event for 8 years. Real-life couple Richard Gutierrez and Sarah Lahbati attended the ball for the first time, with Sarah elegantly pulling off a sophisticated look with her 3-month old baby bump then.
Also, the 23-year old actress Sue Ramirez donned a jaw-dropping racy, see-through black dress. Her scene stealer ensemble became a hot topic of the crowd during and even days after the ball was held.
The newest and most sensational love teams MayWard (Maymay Entrata and Edward Barber) and KissMarc (Kissess Delavin and Marco Gallo) attended their first ever Star Magic Ball. And who would’ve thought that first timers can be recognized that easily? KissMarc bagged the Best Dressed Award last year along with Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach. Pia stunned everyone with her new bob cut hairstyle while donning a long-sleeved, off shoulder black dress.
