One dramatic comeback: Beauty Gonzalez rises from “dead end” to plum role in “Pusong Ligaw”

You are just so enamored and disarmed when you look at her, hear her voice, and glance at her faint but charming smile. There’s always boisterous laughter when she makes that witty dig, proof of her engaging persona to those around her.

But Beauty Gonzalez is more than just justifying that nickname she carries. She has become a no-nonsense actress people will surely respect and recognize.

Simple farm life

Who would think that this Dumaguete native would even leave her town over eight years ago and try her luck in showbiz? With her family owning and operating a coconut and sugar cane farm in Negros Oriental, who wouldn’t choose to just enjoy the simple life?

“We have a farm so life before showbiz, nasa farm lang ako parati, studying. And I didn’t get to study seriously kasi teenager, medyo pasaway. Lagi ako nasa friends. Wala lang. Simple lang pangarap ko dati. Gusto ko lang, I’ll travel the world. I’ll work hard to travel the world. Yun lang,” Beauty noted.

But time came the most influential figure in her life, her mom Carina, rouse her up one day informing her of a local audition for Pinoy Big Brother: Teen Edition Plus.

PBB audition

“My mom saw an audition for PBB. And then so sabi niya, mag-audition ka. Sabi ko, ikaw kaya mag-audition, gusto mo di ba?” Beauty recalled telling her mom in jest.

Initially, Beauty was hesitant, considering the difficulty of even making the auditions.

“Galit pa ako kasi ayokong pumila doon ang haba haba, ang init init. O ang yaya ang pipila para sa yo, pagdating noon, ikaw na ang sasala ha? Sige fine para di kami mag-away,” she said.

When she faced the audition, Beauty seemingly made a lasting impression.

“When I got there, tinanong ako bakit gusto kong sumali sa PBB. Sabi ko gusto ng nanay ko. Di ko alam na they see something in me na. I don’t know what. May nakita sila,” Beauty emphasized.

Helpful mom

And when she became a housemate and eventually ended up as the Fourth Big Placer in 2008, Beauty would only thank her mom for really providing direction for her.

“Thankful din ako sa mom ko. Before I don’t know what to do, my mom led the way and I think this is what I really loved to do. Eto na talaga ang dapat gawin ko sa buhay ko, maging artista. Kasi dati di ko pa iniisip eh. Tapos biglang kahit di ko sya hinihingi, dumadating siya sa akin. So I think ito talaga ang purpose ko,” she stressed.

Just right leaving the Pinoy Big Brother House, Beauty first appeared as a guest in the Claudine Barretto-starrer Iisa Pa Lamang, then portraying bit roles in subsequent teleseryes.

Her destiny

But there was this one teleserye that really made her realize that acting was her destiny.

“Nag-iba na talaga yung pananaw ko sa work ko was when I started doing Alynna because doon ako natutong umarte talaga. Doon ako natutong magbasa ng script, doon ka natutong iarte ang role ko because I had a great mentor at that time, si direk FMR (FM Reyes),“ Beauty said.

Beauty played Liza, Alyna’s (Shaina Magdayao) Visayan best friend, and during that stint she proved her promise as an actress.

“That’s the time I loved my job. Wow, di lang pala ito pa-cute pa-cute. Parang it’s a privilege to show people how other people feel in portraying a character. So that’s when I loved my work,” she stated.

Since then, however, she grew more and more frustrated having not able to get the roles she wanted as her appearance didn’t fit them, tempting her to leave the limelight.

“I wasn’t thin before. I was fat. So parang I was really sad because di ako pumapayat. Wala akong confidence na ito ba talaga ang gagawin ko? Kasi parang di naman welcome ang katawan ko dito at saka sa itsura ko. Tapos yung mga roles na pumupunta sa akin, di maganda,” Beauty recalled.

Rejections

The worst was getting rejected several times because of this.

“Maraming mga rejections na nangyari sa akin. And then syempre iisip ka gagawin ko pa ba ito o uuwi ka na lang?,” she said.

Despite it all, her mom Carina just remained beside her and continued to encourage her to be strong. “But I was just happy na nandoon din lang mom ko. She keeps saying it’s okay. If you’re going to be rejected a million times, something big will happen to you na you just work hard for it. So that’s what keeps me going,” Beauty noted.

Motivation

This was the motivation for her to lose weight and live a healthy lifestyle.

“It was a wake-up call for me to lose the weight and look different and be a lady na. Di na yung teenybopper,” she said.

She appeared in several major teleseryes, but it seemed she was typecast with a certain role.

“I’m always the best friend. I’m always the tag-along friend na pagsinabi nung bida tara, tara! Siyempre I need to say tara in a different way para mapansin… nung Dream Dad, pa-cute cute pa yon, and sa Ningning I was a mom. Medyo drama pero medyo light lang,” Beauty noted.

After this, yet another turning point came in Beauty’s life that she said that might have made her lose it all. Her unexpected pregnancy.

Dead end

“My God, parang dead end na ito. Kasi I was doing well already. I worked hard for it then biglang I got pregnant. So paano na ito, dead end na ba ito? Saan ako pupunta?” she said.

Beauty then took a leave from showbiz for a year and concentrated on being an expectant mother and giving birth to her only child with non-showbiz boyfriend Norman Crisologo, Olivia.

After giving birth, Beauty found it quite touching that ABS-CBN never lost interest in her. The network offered what has become her biggest dramatic project in her career, Pusong Ligaw, which will premiere on Monday, April 24, on Kapamilya Gold.

“Amazingly, ABS-CBN was still there for me. Now that I have a really really nice show unexpectedly, so I am really happy that I’m back,” she said. “This is my first drama role dati I imagine it, now I’m doing it. So prayers do come true. Laki ng impact to sa akin kasi I’ve been in the business for eight years already,” she declared.

She said this was something would not let go of.

Doing my best

“When I got pregnant, that was the time when I got to think what I wanted to do with my life. So sabi ko, if ever bibigyan ako ng show ng ABS, I will really give it my best. I’m happy na nakikita naman nila na I’m doing my best,“ Beauty said.

How did she prepare herself for this milestone role of Tessa and eventually Terri in the drama?

“Dami ko rin napagdaanan kasi one year din ako nagpahinga. I mean, kung sa sasakyan pa yan, kailangan mo pang ipa-machine shop, ipapa-change oil. So I had to undergo a lot also,” she stressed.

Supportive staff

But she said she was thankful that the production staff was very helpful.

“And thankful ako na lahat ng staff very supportive talaga and they really believe in me. Importante yun eh na naniniwala sila na kaya ko. Kasi pag naniniwala sila, ikaw rin nadadala na kaya mo rin. So sobrang thankful na ang swerte ko na napunta ako sa mga mababait na tao,

People really noticed a stark improvement and incredible depth in her portrayal of Tessa and Terri. What influenced her?

“Siguro after giving birth, may hugot na, may sense of maturity na. Kasi noon, bata pa, wala pang paki. Ngayon mature na,” she stressed.

Remarkable actress

And, how does she relate to her biggest teleserye role in her career?

“Similar siguro na I’m very obedient to my mom. Even though there are times na pasaway ako. Pagsinabi ng mom ko sit down, I sit down. Yun siguro, but in a way pareho din kasi inuuna ko ang puso ko,” Beauty stated.

With this, her breakthrough dramatic performance is truly one of the biggest reasons why Pusong Ligaw is much anticipated. This is apart from making Beauty Gonzalez another remarkable actress people will admire and recognize.
