Being in the showbiz industry for 12 years, Zanjoe Marudo is yet to prove again that he is an all-around actor as he will play the role of Marlon, husband of Angelica Panganiban’s character Patty and, most especially, a doting foster father to JJ Quilantang’s Robin in the upcoming teleserye Playhouse.
Surely, being a dad is not new to this exceptional thespian as he played impressive father roles to which he received much acclaim. Here are six of his awesome portrayals as a father over the years that showcased his remarkable talent as an actor.
1. Super Islaw in Super Inggo
After being named Fourth Big Placer in Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Edition 1 in 2006, Zanjoe was tapped to play his first daddy role, Super Islaw, in his first primetime television series, Super Inggo. Super Islaw is one of the superheroes and the father of Budong/Super Inggo, portrayed by Makisig Morales in the fantaserye that became a finalist in the “Children and Young People” category of the 2007 International Emmy Awards. A prequel was aired the following year, entitled Super Inggo 1.5: Ang Bagong Bangis.
2. Guido in Annaliza
Zanjoe was given the chance anew to take another father role in the 2014 hit series Annaliza. He played the role of Gideon “Guido” Querubin, the father of the titular character portrayed by Andrea Brillantes. The story revolved around how Annaliza was raised by Guido, who was not actually his biological father. The show was a huge success ever since it first aired as it garnered ratings way higher than its rival program.
3. Baste in Dream Dad
Right after Annaliza, Zanjoe took a lead daddy role in the comedy-drama television series Dream Dad, appearing as Sebastian "Baste" V. Javier, who assumed the responsibility of being a father to Baby, portrayed by Jana Cassandra Agoncillo, although they were not related biologically. Zanjoe was also paired with Beauty Gonzalez, who played the role of Angel, Baste’s executive assistant. Dream Dad bagged the Year’s Choice of Drama award in the 2015 11th USTV Awards.
4. Natoy in Tubig at Langis
2016 was another successful year for Zanjoe as he appeared in the yet another hit drama, Tubig at Langis, opposite Cristine Reyes. He played Natoy, husband of Cristine’s character Irene, in the series that depicted their rollercoaster marriage involving a third party Clara, played by Isabelle Daza, who did everything just to get in the way of Natoy and Irene’s love for each other. The story also showed Natoy’s fatherly love for Mico, portrayed by Miguel Vergara, who is Irene’s son with another man yet Natoy considers his own.
5. Juan in MMK “Kweba”
And in the same year, Zanjoe appeared as Juan Garana, a devoted and courageous father to his children, Rowena (Xyriel Manabat), Jayson (Louise Abuel) and Junior (Alfonso Ynigo Belen), despite all of life’s hardships. This MMK special Father’s Day episode in June 2016 touched and moved everyone’s hearts with how Zanjoe portrayed the role of a loving and strong father. His incredible performance earned him a Best Performance of an Actor nomination in the 2017 International Emmy Awards.
6. Jude in My Dear Heart
Zanjoe was then chosen to be part of the main cast of the fantasy drama series My Dear Heart, wherein he played the role of Jude de Jesus, the unwitting father of the titular character Heart, played by Nayomi Ramos. The story centered on the journey of Jude’s family as his daughter was in a coma after suffering from a rare heart condition.
This September, Zanjoe will soon be immersed in a relatively different genre, yet in the same familiar role in Playhouse, his first team-up with Angelica that centers on how being surrogate parents become their characters Marlon and Patty’s opportunity to redeem their tattered marriage. Indeed, this much-anticipated lighthearted series will surely be close to everyone’s hearts.
