In the top-rating series On the Wings of Love, we’ve seen the younger generation getting caught up with the exhausting and confusing adult life. But thanks to the elders, especially to the Olivar patriarch Tatang Sol (Joel Torre), whose timeless words of wisdom never fail to bring clearer perspective and comfort.
Tatang Sol knows that chasing an American dream is a scary and uncertain journey. But, as supportive as he is, he gave youngest daughter Leah (Nadine Lustre) the go signal to embark on that risky adventure. While watching his daughter’s eyes burn with excitement and after weighing down the situation, Tatang Sol hinted that dreams are worth the shot, as long as achieved in a fair, legal, and clean fight.
Nothing would come close to Tatang Sol’s beautiful and sound pieces of advice about love. And the manner he would preach these words makes listening and memorizing his teachings a lot easier. “Masakit talaga ang pag-ibig. Okay lang masaktan at umiyak. Ang mahalaga, nagmahal.”
When daughter Tiffany (Bianca Manalo) was losing faith in love, Tarang Sol was there to boost her with positive notes on why love is still the sweetest thing in the world despite the risks, pain and challenges that come with it. “Ang pag-ibig, anak, sugal ‘yan. ‘Pag mahal mo ang isang tao, handa kang isugal ang puso mo. Puwede kang matalo. Pero kapag nanalo ka naman, jackpot! Kaligayahang walang kapantay habambuhay!”
He also said that willingness to wait is a sign of true love. “Kapag mahal ka, hihintayin ka. Diyan masusukat ang pagmamahal, kung kakayanin niyang maghintay hanggang sa handa ka na.”
Being the head of the family and having been a devoted husband, Tatang Sol inculcated firm marriage principles in his daughters’ minds. He had many times instilled in them that marriage is a sacred gift. So, every time Leah and Clark (James Reid) face misunderstandings, Tatang Sol would incessantly remind them to stick with the vows they made. “Ang isang taong mahirap, prinsipyo lang ang pinanghahawakan. Kaya ang prinsipyo ng pamilyang ito, ‘pag may sinumpaan, dapat panindigan. Sagrado ang kasal.”
The Olivar patriarch is the best dad and father-in-law anyone could wish for, as he never gets tired of mediating between Leah and Clark’s LQs and laying down the rules of married life founded in love. “Ang mag-asawa nagdadamayan. Ang asawa nandiyan ‘pag kailangan mo. Ang mag-asawa habambuhay nang konektado sa isa’t isa.”
And despite being broken and hurt at times, never turn your back on love. With all the pain it can bring, love is still beautiful and worth it. “Dahil nilalayo mo ang puso mo sa pag-ibig kaya wala kang sigla. Hindi ka masaya. Ang pusong hindi umiibig, unti-unting namamatay. Huwag mong hayaang mangyari ‘yon.”
Life is a journey that doesn’t come with a cheat sheet. But when it becomes a confusing maze, a father’s golden advice rooted from experience and wisdom can make the path clearer.
