Anji Salvacion spent her breather before our interview singing songs by and talking about Michael Jackson and The Carpenters. When asked about this fascination of hers and if we're going to find her singing at least an old song or two on her upcoming album launch, she said:

“What really fascinates me with old classic songs are…Unang-una sa lahat naimpluwensiyahan ako ng lolo ko, si Tatay Fortunato ko. He’s one of my biggest influences in life. (Secondly), feeling ko kasi napaka-raw ng old songs. ‘Di ba? Alam mo yung feel na they’re just expressing themselves, it moves me a lot. I like and listen to the other genres, but there’s something about the appeal of old songs that touches my soul in a different way. Or maybe I’m just an old soul myself kaya sobrang mas appealing sa ‘kin ang old songs and I’m fascinated with them a lot. Let’s see if I can squeeze a classic song or two sa concert, bili kayo tickets sa Grit Album Launch to find out.”

The Kapamilya star promises to shine with messages of bravery, empowerment and resilience when she launches her new EP GRIT at Gateway Cineplex 5 this March 16.

Her new EP might brandish a more modern and dynamic brand of pop music compared to the pop classics of yore. Heck, it even sounds more modern and dynamic compared to her introspective 2022 debut album Kasingkasing Dalampasigan. But the six tracks of GRIT do deserve to be regarded as classics in the future.

Released under ABS-CBN Music’s StarPop, contains six tracks that heavily revolves around the themes of confidence, empowerment, love, and letting go.

“Bringing it back, when he had our first meeting, we all agreed that we wanted to show something different, and something that is inspirational lalong-lalo na sa mga bata na babae sa lahat ng mga women out there," Anji shared. "So Grit is, for me, is inspired ng mga girls na alam mong iniis=standardized or stereotyped ng mga tao na ‘Hanggang dito ka lang…’ or ‘Dapat ganito-ganyan ka lang…’  Hindi naman ako makakapayag na ganun lang dapat. So I wanted to inspire them in a way na…This whole EP is a statement, and I want to leave an impact through music, and I want to convey that message to them that they’re worth something a whole lot more and are capable of doing something great. We don’t have to remain in that certain place kung saan nililimitahan lang tayo ng ibang tao.”

GRIT refers to having an unbreakable or indomitable spirit. Being brave enough to take chances in life, being strong and resilient enough to learn from one's mistakes without losing sight of the importance of being an authentic person with humility and integrity, and lastly, having tenacity—the determination to pursue one's goals no matter what,” Anji said in another interview with ABS-CBN.

Her current single “You Didn’t” shows how people can have no hurtful feelings and be able to live on amid a breakup. It was composed by Trisha Denise and produced by certified hitmaking producer-songwriter Roque “Rox” Santos. The music video shows Anji in her full on pop star era which is directed by renowned Filipina drag queen Marina Summers.

"I want to embody the message in the song na ‘We’re gonna fight for our dreams, we’re gonna keep going, and we’re gonna surpass the limits the whole world has seemingly have set for us,” Anji said with determination.

Other tracks in GRIT include “Happy” composed by Lian Dyogi, “Just Stay” composed by SAB and C-Tru, “Masterpiece” composed by SAB, “Don’t Lie 2 Me” composed by Kio Priest, and a remix version of “Paraiso” composed by Alex Gordeev and Anne Marie Ala.

But if the songs on GRIT were written by various composers, could it still be considered an album that embodies Anji?

“I love that question! Siguro why I can still say that it’s my album is because I’ve been honest to the music, and I’ve been vulnerable to it," Anji said. "‘Dun mo masasabi na ‘ikaw’ ang album, kasi ikaw ang nag-interpret kung paano mo i-perceive ang song. True enough that if you are vulnerable and you open yourself enough to the song, it will become yours. Lahat din ng singer kahit mag-cover ka, mararnasan mo ‘yan, so I would day na it’s because of that vulnerability and because of that honesty. Kasi if you are vulnerable and honest to, your self and your identity will show in the song, ikaw mismo ang lalabas sa kanta…”

Anji was first introduced to the public after she joined the first season of Idol Philippines in 2019. Her first big break came in 2022 after winning the Pinoy Big Brother: Kumunity Season 10 where she became known as the “singing sweetheart ng Siargao.” She entered the music scene being included on various original soundtracks (OSTs) including “Buo” from Marry Me, Marry You“Keeps on Coming Back” from Unloving You, and “Don’t Be Afraid” from My Sunset Girl.

She previously released her debut EP Kasingkasing Dalampasigan which contains self-penned tracks and spawned the single “Dalampasigan” that has amassed over 2.7 million streams across different platforms. Last year, she delved into a bright and pop sound with her single “Paraiso” which has more than one million streams on Spotify.

With her Album Launch, exppect Anji to go all out guns ablazing. “Unang-una sa lahat, mae-expect nila ang bagong Anji," she said. "Yung bagong Anji na kung palaban man dati, mas palaban siya ngayon, ‘yung hindi basta-basta nabi-bring down. And aside from that, the music is going to be pop, so we’re all gonna be dancing there, and I can’t wait to sing it with all of them (the fans). And of course, yung other thing to abangan pa dito is the message of the songs itself. Pinaka-goal ko ‘yung ma-convey yung message ng each and every song there is on that EP, which talks about the reality of life.”
