Sophia Reola first charmed us with her unmistakable cuteness and hilarity with her regular stint on Goin’ Bulilit and amused us with her energy and talent as one of the members of Team Yey! Now, Sophia is set to showcase her dramatic acting chops as she headlines the newest teleserye offering of ABS-CBN this year – Nang Ngumiti Ang Langit.
Replacing the recently concluded Playhouse on its PrimeTanghali slot, the daytime series will follow the story of the young lead protagonist Mikmik (played by Sophia) on her quest of finding their relatives and her estranged dad after her ill mother Ella (Kaye Abad) suffered from, and eventually, succumbed to leukemia.
Before we’re able to witness another great and sure-fire project created by the prolific RSB production RSB Unit and helmed by renowned directors FM Reyes and Ayette de Guzman, ABS-CBN.com Entertainment had a chat with the breakout child star about her first-ever starring role and a few things about herself.
In her three years in the local show business the 10-year-old child star has already appeared in a few Kapamilya teleseryes wherein she played the kid versions of the leading ladies, namely, FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano as the young Alyana Arevalo (Yassi Pressman), Pusong Ligaw as the young Vida (Sofia Andres), and Ngayon At Kailanman as the young Eva (Julia Barretto).
On her role as Mikmik
However, this is only the first time that she’s given a major role that’s why she said she couldn’t help but feel “happy and nervous” at the same time.
Thankfully, even if Sophia did not undergo any acting workshop prior to the start of their taping, Direk FM is always there to help her by motivating her especially in the crying scenes.
She then went on to share that there’s a part of their shooting when she had difficulty in crying and Direk FM came to her rescue.
When asked if she can identify herself with Mikmik, who she described as “mabait, magalang, mapagmahal lalo na po sa pamilya, at mapagkakatiwalaan,” Sophia said that she can somehow relate with her because she’s also kind and helpful as well.
Unlike her adult co-actors whose roles were just handed to them, she revealed that she had to attend the casting call and auditioned for the adorable lead character.
On her relationship with her co-stars
Since she is surrounded by some of the most respected veteran actors and talented seasoned and promising artists, we quizzed her on how she feels working along with them. However, she had a hard time finding the right words to describe it as she seemed to be too overwhelmed with the great opportunity given to her.
Although she related that they indeed have a fun set, the child actress confessed being so intimidated with them at first as she perceived them as serious and nonchalant, but was able to bond with them eventually. They even gave her some pieces of advice about being a public personality and acting.
“Maging humble lang daw po ako kahit sumikat daw po ako, tapos kapag magmo-motivate raw po, bilisan daw po kasi sinusunod po naman ‘yong four hours,” she conveyed. Four hours a day, or twenty hours a week, is the length of time the government has imposed for child talents working for television and movies.
She also opened up about her relationship with her co-stars Kaye Abad and Cristine Reyes behind the camera. For her Ate Kaye, she shared, “Minsan po naglalaro lang po kami ng ‘nanay-tatay’, tapos po minsan naman po nagkukuwentuhan kami.” Whereas with her Ate Cristine, she said, “Mabait po siya tapos po ‘yong relationship po namin parang medyo nagiging close po kami.”
On why NNAL is a must-watch
Kiddie seryes arguably never failed to get us hooked through the years not only because of the charismatic appeal of the child stars, but of how they always warm our hearts with their compelling acting skills. And for sure, this newest series will not be an exception as Sophia assured, “Kasi po ‘yong Nang Ngumiti Ang Langit, papaiyakin niya po kayo, papatawanin, papasayahin, tapos po papagalitin niya po kayo.”
Let Sophia Reola’s radiant cuteness, glowing beam, and impressive performance capture your hearts every morning as Nang Ngumiti Ang Langit begins on Monday, March 25, before It’s Showtime!
