Viewers of Marry Me, Marry You got a pleasant, tearjerker surprise during the pilot episode when Lotlot de Leon appeared as Judith, the mother of Camille (Janine Gutierrez). Her character died of cancer while Camille was still young, leaving her orphaned daughter under her best friends’ care.
She’s happy to be reunited with most of the cast members like Janine’s leading man Paulo Avelino and Cherry Pie Picache, both whom she worked with in the action-drama series Walang Hanggang Paalam.
On working with her daughter, the seasoned actress said it’s always nice because they also get to bond on set. They don’t need much adjustment. Their rapport looks the same on and off cam, only they have to deliver dramatic dialogues in front of the cameras.
Lotlot is not that involved in Janine’s career anymore. She leaves the decision to her daughter in choosing the right material and playing a role, unlike when Janine was still a newcomer. As a close witness to Janine’s journey, Lotlot is proud of how much she’s grown as an actress. Janine has learned to be discerning, taking her mother’s greatest advice that “you can never go wrong with a good script.”
And probably the best validation of Janine’s acting maturity and talent is her Best Actress trophy. As a mom, Lotlot feels proud but she wouldn’t take even a little credit, saying it was all because of Janine’s hard work. “Hindi naman ako sumanib sa kanya. Siya ‘yung nagpuyat, siya ‘yung nagtrabaho para makuha ‘yun, so nakaka-proud.”
While Janine is making waves in acting, her brother Diego Gutierrez is carving his own path in music. He’s a regular performer on ASAP Natin ‘To as part of its new breed of singers alongside Sam Cruz, Anji Salvacion, and KD Estrada.
Lotlot is proud of her kids – all the four of them – for knowing what they want and working hard on getting them. “They are hardworking kids. Kung anuman ang ibigay sa kanila ng pagkakataon, hindi nila sinasayang. Kaya nakaka-proud kasi unang-una, alam na nila ang gusto nilang marating. Kaya kung anuman ang binibigay sa kanila na oportunidad, pinaghihirapan nila ‘yun,” said Lotlot.
